Celebrating in Evanston

Where Evanston hosts use dance floors & staging

Evanston packs a lot into a few square miles. There is the Northwestern campus pressed against the lake, the old mansions and lilac-lined streets of the lakeshore historic district, and a downtown full of restaurants that regularly host rehearsal dinners and showers. Weekends in May and June feel like one long graduation party.

The lake is the constant. Ceremonies near Lighthouse Beach or the Grosse Point Lighthouse grounds, picnics along the lakefront parks and backyard dinners a few blocks inland all deal with the same thing: wind off the water that can turn a calm afternoon brisk in minutes. Chairs that sit low and stay put matter more here than in most suburbs.

  • Lakefront parks and beaches

Lakefront settings are beautiful and windy. The city typically handles permits for gatherings on park property, so check before you plan seating.

Dance floors & staging here: Parks rarely allow a dance floor without a pavilion or permit, so check the rules before planning dancing on grass.

  • Historic homes and gardens

Victorian and Prairie-style houses often have garden rooms, porches and deep backyards reached by alleys rather than driveways.

Dance floors & staging here: A dance floor on grass needs a level subfloor first, which adds to the price. A patio or driveway is often the cheapest base.

  • Campus-adjacent celebrations

Graduation weekend brings dinners and receptions to homes, restaurants and rented rooms near Northwestern. Plan early, since the whole town is busy.

Dance floors & staging here: Check the venue's floor plan for a built-in dance area. Many lofts need a rented floor to protect concrete or carpet.

  • Churches and community halls

Evanston has a deep bench of historic congregations whose halls host receptions, memorials and milestone celebrations.

Dance floors & staging here: Most halls already have a hard floor; rent a white or black floor only for the look, or a small stage for the band.

Delivery notes for Evanston

  • Older homes may need chairs carried through a side gate or up porch steps. A photo of the route helps us plan the crew.
  • Many blocks have permit-only or time-limited parking. Tell us where a truck can stop briefly, or whether the alley behind your home is the better route.

How to plan

Getting dance floor rentals right

  1. 01

    Who dances

Assume 30-50% of guests are on the floor at peak.

  2. 02

    Square footage

Give each dancer about 3-4.5 sq ft: 15x15 for 150 guests, 18x18 for 200+.

  3. 03

    Stage

A 8x12 to 12x16 stage at 16-24" high fits a band; DJs usually need only a table.
