Celebrating in DeKalb

DeKalb is a college town on the western edge of Chicagoland, and Northern Illinois University sets its calendar. Commencement weekends in May and December bring families from across the state, and every restaurant, hall and backyard in town fills up. The town is also known as the birthplace of barbed wire, a nod to its farming roots, and the Egyptian Theatre remains a downtown landmark.

Celebrations here spread between campus-adjacent neighborhoods, the quiet tree-lined streets around Annie Glidden Road, and the farm country that starts a few minutes out of town. Parks such as Hopkins Park and Kishwaukee Kiwanis Park give families picnic space, and the Kishwaukee River nearby is a favorite for photos. Backyards and church halls host most family milestones. Fall football Saturdays and homecoming also fill the town, so any event near campus needs a plan for traffic.

Logistically, DeKalb is a drive from the Chicago core, so delivery runs are longer than in the near suburbs. Route 23, Lincoln Highway and Annie Glidden Road are the main arteries, and trucks need to plan around event weekends at NIU. We match you with the closest vendor and itemize delivery so you know what the distance adds. Planning a graduation party? Ask early about tent permits and neighbors' driveways.

Where people celebrate

  • I.

    Graduation backyard parties

NIU commencement weekends mean lots of tents and chairs in yards near campus and out in the county.

  • II.

    Downtown DeKalb events

Historic buildings near the Egyptian Theatre have tight loading, so confirm access with the venue.

  • III.

    Park pavilions

Hopkins Park and other DeKalb Park District sites rent pavilions for parties. Reserve early for May.

  • IV.

    Country and farm lots

Just outside town, larger lots and barns host weddings and family reunions with gravel drives.

Delivery notes

Know before we arrive

Every DeKalb venue is a little different. These are the things we ask about on a planning call so chairs are placed and ready before your first guest walks in.

  1. 01

DeKalb is on the western edge of our delivery area, so we confirm the vendor and drive time before quoting.

  2. 02

NIU commencement and homecoming weekends crowd roads and parking near campus. Book delivery windows early and confirm access.

  3. 03

Winter storms and wind off the open fields can affect timing in colder months. We build in buffer for outdoor and tent events.

  4. 04

For park pavilions, check with the DeKalb Park District about reservations and where a truck can unload.

Questions

Renting chairs in DeKalb

Where can I rent tables and chairs in DeKalb, IL?

You can request them through us. We connect you with vetted Chicago-area rental vendors who deliver to DeKalb and the surrounding county. Send your date, address and guest count and we will return an itemized quote covering chairs, tables, delivery and setup.

How early should I book for an NIU graduation weekend?

As early as you can. Commencement weekends fill quickly, so request a quote once the date is confirmed, ideally a couple of months ahead. Spring is not too soon for May events. We are booking the 2026-27 season now, so an early request keeps your date and options open.

Do I need a permit for a tent party in DeKalb?

Tent and event rules depend on size and location, and the City of DeKalb sets the requirements. Check with city hall or the DeKalb Park District before you book a large tent, and tell us what they approve. A quick planning call can sort out the details before you commit to anything.

Can you deliver to a park pavilion in DeKalb?

Usually, if the park allows vehicle access for deliveries. Reserve the pavilion through the DeKalb Park District and ask about unloading rules, then share them with us when you request a quote. Send your date, address and rough headcount and we will itemize chairs, tables, delivery and setup in your quote.

Does delivery cost more to DeKalb?

It can, because DeKalb is farther from the Chicago core. Your quote itemizes delivery so you can see how the address affects the total before you commit. We are booking the 2026-27 season now, so an early request keeps your date and options open.
