Celebrating in Evanston
Where Evanston hosts use concessions
Evanston packs a lot into a few square miles. There is the Northwestern campus pressed against the lake, the old mansions and lilac-lined streets of the lakeshore historic district, and a downtown full of restaurants that regularly host rehearsal dinners and showers. Weekends in May and June feel like one long graduation party.
Lakefront parks and beaches
Lakefront settings are beautiful and windy. The city typically handles permits for gatherings on park property, so check before you plan seating.
Concessions here: Parks without power need a generator for concession machines, and some do not allow food stands without approval.
Historic homes and gardens
Victorian and Prairie-style houses often have garden rooms, porches and deep backyards reached by alleys rather than driveways.
Concessions here: Concession machines need a level table and an outlet; popcorn and cotton candy machines each use a standard circuit, so avoid sharing it with a bounce house blower.
Campus-adjacent celebrations
Graduation weekend brings dinners and receptions to homes, restaurants and rented rooms near Northwestern. Plan early, since the whole town is busy.
Concessions here: Venues often have exclusive caterers, so check whether outside concession machines are allowed.
Churches and community halls
Evanston has a deep bench of historic congregations whose halls host receptions, memorials and milestone celebrations.
Concessions here: Halls may limit open food stations or require them in the kitchen area; ask before you plan a cotton candy station.
Delivery notes for Evanston
- On lakefront dates, plan for wind. Heavier wood chairs hold their ground better than lightweight pieces on open grass.
- Graduation weekend congests streets near campus, so we schedule deliveries with extra time on those dates.
How to plan
Getting popcorn, cotton candy and concession rentals right
- 01
Pick your treats
Popcorn and cotton candy suit kids and school events; dessert and coffee carts suit weddings and corporate events.
- 02
Count servings
Plan 1-2 servings per guest; one popcorn kit makes about 20-25 servings.
- 03
Power
Most machines need a standard 15-20 amp outlet within 50 feet, or a generator outdoors.
- 04
Staffing
Machines are self-serve with a volunteer; carts often include an attendant, so check what is included.
