Celebrating in Gold Coast
Where Gold Coast hosts use lighting
The Gold Coast is one of Chicago's most formal neighborhoods, with tree-lined streets of greystones, Victorian mansions and doorman high-rises facing the lake. Events here tend to be smaller and more polished: a seated dinner for 40 in a townhouse, a benefit reception in a private club, an engagement party in a penthouse with views up Lake Shore Drive.
Greystones and historic townhouses
Intimate dinners and parties where narrow stairs and fine floors call for careful handling.
Lighting here: String lights between trees or poles turn a yard into a venue after dark. Plan power runs and keep cords off walkways.
Doorman high-rises and penthouses
Lakefront buildings that typically require service-elevator reservations and vendor insurance.
Lighting here: Rooftops need wind-rated fixtures and battery uplights where cords cannot run. Keep lights low to protect the view.
Private clubs and hotel salons
Formal rooms that host galas and receptions, often with their own vendor policies.
Lighting here: Check what the venue's house lighting can do first, then rent uplights or pin spots for the cake and centerpieces.
Lakefront parks and Oak Street area
Settings near the beach for photos and small gatherings, subject to Chicago Park District rules.
Lighting here: Park events usually end at dusk; if yours does not, battery lanterns and uplights avoid the need for power.
Delivery notes for Gold Coast
- Historic homes often have tight turns and delicate finishes. Let us know about stairs, banisters and flooring so we bring the right protection.
- Penthouse and rooftop terraces can be windy. Heavier chairs like the Louis medallion or velvet dining styles hold steady better than light folding frames.
How to plan
Getting event lighting rentals right
- 01
Uplighting
One uplight every 8-10 feet of wall, set to your color palette.
- 02
String lights
For a tent, plan the tent length x 3-4 for a zig-zag or perimeter pattern.
- 03
Drape
Pipe and drape is priced per running foot; use it to hide walls, storage or a kitchen door.
