Celebrating in DeKalb
Where DeKalb hosts use heating & cooling
Celebrations here spread between campus-adjacent neighborhoods, the quiet tree-lined streets around Annie Glidden Road, and the farm country that starts a few minutes out of town. Parks such as Hopkins Park and Kishwaukee Kiwanis Park give families picnic space, and the Kishwaukee River nearby is a favorite for photos. Backyards and church halls host most family milestones. Fall football Saturdays and homecoming also fill the town, so any event near campus needs a plan for traffic.
Logistically, DeKalb is a drive from the Chicago core, so delivery runs are longer than in the near suburbs. Route 23, Lincoln Highway and Annie Glidden Road are the main arteries, and trucks need to plan around event weekends at NIU. We match you with the closest vendor and itemize delivery so you know what the distance adds. Planning a graduation party? Ask early about tent permits and neighbors' driveways.
Graduation backyard parties
NIU commencement weekends mean lots of tents and chairs in yards near campus and out in the county.
Heating & cooling here: Propane patio heaters need clearance from tent walls, trees and eaves. Plan one heater per 10 to 12 guests on a cold night.
Downtown DeKalb events
Historic buildings near the Egyptian Theatre have tight loading, so confirm access with the venue.
Heating & cooling here: Venues often have their own fire rules for propane. Electric heaters or forced-air units outside the space may be required.
Park pavilions
Hopkins Park and other DeKalb Park District sites rent pavilions for parties. Reserve early for May.
Heating & cooling here: Many parks restrict open-flame and propane heaters, so ask the park district before you rely on them.
Country and farm lots
Just outside town, larger lots and barns host weddings and family reunions with gravel drives.
Heating & cooling here: Old barns get cold and drafty in spring and fall. Forced-air tent heaters work better than patio heaters in large spaces.
