Celebrating in Darien
Where Darien hosts use tents
Darien feels quieter and more car-based than some neighbors. Events are mostly home-grown: graduation open houses, communion and confirmation lunches, backyard cookouts, and showers. Guests often come from Burr Ridge, Woodridge, Downers Grove and Westmont, so guest lists draw from several directions. The mix of ranch homes and wooded lots gives hosts plenty of options for where to set up.
Backyard open houses and cookouts
Mid-sized lots fit 40 to 80 guests. Plan table placement around the grill, patio and trees.
Tents here: Before anything else, mark sprinkler heads, septic fields and buried utilities. Stake tents need soft ground and clearance; frame tents can sit on patios with weights.
Darien Sportsplex and park events
Team banquets and birthday parties use park spaces. Confirm rules with the Darien Park District and the facility.
Tents here: Most park districts limit staking and require approval for tents, so a weighted frame tent or a reserved pavilion is often the simpler route.
Forest preserve outings
Waterfall Glen hosts picnics and gatherings. Check with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County for permits.

Church halls and banquet rooms
Communion lunches, anniversaries and receptions often need extra chairs and linens.
Tents here: Halls rarely need a tent, but an entry canopy keeps guests dry between the parking lot and the door in spring and fall.

How to plan
Getting tent rentals right
- 01
Size it
Seated dinner: 10-12 sq ft per guest. Standing cocktail: 6-8 sq ft. Add room for dance floor, bar and buffet.
- 02
Check the ground
Pole tents are staked into grass; frame tents can sit on pavement with water barrels or concrete weights.
- 03
Permits and utilities
Many Chicago-area towns require a permit for tents over 400 sq ft, and staking needs a utility locate (JULIE in Illinois).
- 04
Plan for weather
Add sidewalls, heaters or fans; a Chicago spring or fall evening can drop below 50°F.
