Celebrating in Kankakee County
Where Kankakee County hosts use lighting
Kankakee County sits about an hour south of Chicago along the Kankakee River. Kankakee is the county seat and the largest city, with a historic riverfront district and Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes. Bourbonnais, home to Olivet Nazarene University, and Bradley form the busy core along Route 50 and I-57. Manteno, Momence and Herscher round out the county, which blends small-city living with open farmland.
River and state park sites
Kankakee River State Park and riverside parks suit ceremonies and picnics. Check with the managing agency about permits.
Lighting here: Park events usually end at dusk; if yours does not, battery lanterns and uplights avoid the need for power.
Campus and graduation events
Olivet Nazarene University drives graduation and family weekends in Bourbonnais, when chairs and tables go fast.
Lighting here: Check what the venue's house lighting can do first, then rent uplights or pin spots for the cake and centerpieces.
Church halls and community centers
Kankakee, Bradley and Manteno halls host receptions, showers and fundraisers.
Lighting here: Hall lighting is often harsh. Uplights in your colors and dimmed overheads change the room more than any decor.
Farm and country properties
Rural Kankakee County has farm venues and large lots with gravel drives and open ground.
Lighting here: Barns are dark after sunset. String lights along the beams and a few uplights on the walls make the biggest change.
