Celebrating in DuPage County
Where DuPage County hosts use lighting
DuPage County sits directly west of Chicago, and it is almost entirely suburban, which makes it one of the most event-dense counties in Illinois. The county seat is Wheaton, and the biggest names are Naperville, Downers Grove, Lombard, Elmhurst and Oak Brook. Metra's BNSF line runs through Naperville, Downers Grove and Hinsdale, the Union Pacific West line serves Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn and Wheaton, and the I-88 and I-355 corridors tie the whole county together.
Forest preserve and park pavilions
DuPage's forest preserve district and park districts rent shelters for parties. Each has its own reservation and vehicle access rules.
Lighting here: Park events usually end at dusk; if yours does not, battery lanterns and uplights avoid the need for power.
Suburban banquet halls and country clubs
Oak Brook, Lombard and Naperville have plenty of halls. Ask what seating is included before ordering extras.
Lighting here: Hall lighting is often harsh. Uplights in your colors and dimmed overheads change the room more than any decor.
Downtown plaza and riverwalk events
Naperville, Wheaton and Glen Ellyn host festivals and weddings near downtown, where parking and loading take planning.
Lighting here: Park events usually end at dusk; if yours does not, battery lanterns and uplights avoid the need for power.
Backyard graduation and family parties
Large suburban lots with tents are the default for graduation season, and chairs are usually the first thing families run out of.
Lighting here: String lights between trees or poles turn a yard into a venue after dark. Plan power runs and keep cords off walkways.
Delivery notes for DuPage County
- For forest preserve events, check with the district about permitted vehicle access and how far chairs must be carried.
- Many DuPage towns have rules about tents and street parking for events. Check with your village or park district and share what they require.
How to plan
Getting event lighting rentals right
- 01
Uplighting
One uplight every 8-10 feet of wall, set to your color palette.
- 02
String lights
For a tent, plan the tent length x 3-4 for a zig-zag or perimeter pattern.
- 03
Drape
Pipe and drape is priced per running foot; use it to hide walls, storage or a kitchen door.
