Celebrating in North Park

Where North Park hosts use lighting

North Park is a quiet residential neighborhood on the North Side, anchored by North Park University and Northeastern Illinois University. Its streets are lined with brick bungalows, mid-century homes and small apartment buildings, and the North Branch of the Chicago River winds along its edge. Bryn Mawr Avenue and Peterson Avenue are the main commercial streets, with Foster and Kedzie running through the south.

  • Bungalow and mid-century backyards

Roomy lots suit graduations, baptisms and cookouts, usually with alley access.

Lighting here: String lights between trees or poles turn a yard into a venue after dark. Plan power runs and keep cords off walkways.

  • Campus and university receptions

Graduation weekends bring family dinners and receptions to nearby halls and restaurants.

Lighting here: Check what the venue's house lighting can do first, then rent uplights or pin spots for the cake and centerpieces.

  • North Branch forest preserves

Cook County forest preserve groves host family picnics, with permits through the county.

Lighting here: Park events usually end at dusk; if yours does not, battery lanterns and uplights avoid the need for power.

  • Church and cultural halls

Congregations and community centers host receptions and festivals.

Lighting here: Hall lighting is often harsh. Uplights in your colors and dimmed overheads change the room more than any decor.
