Celebrating in Calumet Heights
Where Calumet Heights hosts use lighting
Calumet Heights is a quiet South Side neighborhood of brick bungalows and other single-family homes, centered on Stony Island Avenue and 87th Street. It's a stable, homeowner-heavy community with active block clubs and churches, and its generous lots and mature trees make it a popular backyard-party neighborhood. Many homes here sit on wide lots with mature trees, which gives the area a more suburban feel than much of the city.
Backyards and driveways
Graduations, birthdays and anniversaries, often with tents.
Lighting here: String lights between trees or poles turn a yard into a venue after dark. Plan power runs and keep cords off walkways.
Church halls
Wedding receptions, repasts and community dinners.
Lighting here: Hall lighting is often harsh. Uplights in your colors and dimmed overheads change the room more than any decor.
87th Street banquet rooms
Larger receptions and retirement dinners.
Lighting here: Check what the venue's house lighting can do first, then rent uplights or pin spots for the cake and centerpieces.
Nearby parks and preserves
Picnics and reunions; Chicago Park District or forest preserve permits apply.
Lighting here: Park events usually end at dusk; if yours does not, battery lanterns and uplights avoid the need for power.
