The August 2027 calendar: dates that change your plans
Before you pick a date, check it against this list. Holidays decide who can come, and big city events decide how easy it is to get guests, vendors and delivery trucks to your venue.
| Date (2027) | What | Why it matters for your event |
|---|---|---|
| Early August | Lollapalooza's final days | Downtown hotels and traffic are affected. Check 2027 dates. |
| Sat, Aug 14 (traditional 2nd Saturday) | Bud Billiken Parade, South Side | Closures along the parade route. Check before a South Side delivery. |
| Mid-August (2026: Aug 15 and 16) | Chicago Air and Water Show | Lakefront crowds, traffic and noise. Avoid lakefront load-ins those days. |
| Mid to late August | Back to school | Weekday family events get harder; weekends fill with last summer parties. |
August weather: what to watch out for
August starts hot and eases late. NWS normals for O'Hare give August an average high of 82.5°F, a low of 65.1°F and about 4.25 inches of rain, one of the wetter months of the year. Storms are the main risk, and evenings near water bring mosquitoes.
What to plan for:
- Storm and rain plan. Sidewalls on the tent and flooring for wet grass. A lightning rule that moves guests into a building.
- Heat. Shade, fans and water, as in July. Read misting and shade for summer events.
- Bugs. Ask the venue about mosquito treatment, keep tall grass trimmed around the tent, and use lighting that does not attract bugs to the tables.
- Earlier sunset. Sunset falls from about 8:10 pm on August 1 to about 7:33 pm by August 28. Plan lighting for the end of dinner.

Venue demand and booking lead times in August
August is steady rather than frantic. Weddings continue, and company picnics and reunions take many Saturdays. Tents and lawn games remain in demand, so book them 6 to 8 weeks ahead at least, and earlier for a large tent.
Corporate planners should watch the summer vacation calendar: early August is a common time off for staff with kids. Mid-week picnics in August can work well. Our outdoor corporate summer party guide has a full list of what to rent.
