Most event problems in Chicago come from the calendar, not the plan. A Saturday that looks open turns out to be Marathon day, Lunar New Year, a graduation weekend or the night the Air and Water Show fills the lakefront. This calendar pulls the whole year together, with links to a detailed guide for every month.

The three seasons that matter for booking

Peak season (May to October). Weddings, graduation parties, reunions and company outings all compete for Saturdays. June, September and October go first. Our peak season event rentals guide explains how to plan around the rush, and the best month to host an event in Chicago compares the options.

Holiday season (late November to December). Company and family parties fill the first three weekends of December. Book the venue by early fall. See December holiday party rentals.

Quiet season (January to March). Indoor venues are easier to get, and many are more flexible on dates. Plan for snow, coats and sunsets before 5 pm. Read Chicago winter event planning.

Big Chicago events that affect your plans

Some of the city's biggest events close streets, fill hotels and slow deliveries. The ones to check before you book in the city:

  • Chicago Marathon, Sunday, October 10, 2027: closures across many neighborhoods.
  • St. Patrick's parade and river dyeing, usually the Saturday before March 17.
  • Pride Parade, traditionally the last Sunday in June, on the North Side.
  • Taste of Chicago and Lollapalooza in Grant Park in summer (2026 dates: July 8 to 12 and July 30 to August 2).
  • Chicago Air and Water Show on the lakefront in August (2026: August 15 and 16).

In the suburbs, the bigger factors are school calendars, park district permits and local festivals. Our area guides for places like Naperville, St. Charles and Evanston cover local logistics.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month for an event in Chicago?

September is often the best balance of weather and daylight, with a 75.5°F average high at O'Hare. June and October are close behind. All three are in high demand, so book early or pick a Friday or Sunday.

What is the cheapest time of year to host an event in Chicago?

January to March is usually the quietest season, so venues are often more flexible on dates and terms. Ask each venue about off-peak pricing rather than assuming, because every venue sets its own rates.

How far ahead should I book an event venue in Chicago?

For peak Saturdays from May to October and early December, popular venues are often booked a year or more ahead. Off-season dates can often be booked a few months out.

When is the Chicago Marathon in 2027?

Sunday, October 10, 2027. Streets close along the course across the city, so avoid deliveries and load-ins in the city that day.

When should I book rentals for a Chicago event?

Book the venue first. For peak-season Saturdays, reserve tents, specialty chairs and dance floors 2 to 4 months ahead. Standard tables, chairs and linens can follow, but earlier is always safer.

Which months need a tent in Chicago?

Any outdoor event from April to October should have a tent or indoor backup, for rain in spring, storms and heat in summer, and cold evenings in fall. From November to March, outdoor space needs a heated tent with sidewalls.
