Planning an Event in Chicago in March: What to Watch For
Planning an event in Chicago in March 2027? Holidays, city events, weather, sunset times, booking lead times and rentals to plan around.

March is the turn of the season in Chicago, and it behaves like two months. Early March is winter; late March can bring a 60-degree afternoon followed by snow. The March 2027 calendar: dates that change your plans
Before you pick a date, check it against this list. Holidays decide who can come, and big city events decide how easy it is to get guests, vendors and delivery trucks to your venue.
| Date (2027) | What | Why it matters for your event |
|---|---|---|
| About Mar 9 or 10 | Eid al-Fitr (moon-dependent) | Family gatherings and community dinners book banquet halls for the days after. |
| Usually Sat before Mar 17 | Downtown St. Patrick's parade and river dyeing | Expect heavy crowds and closures downtown. Avoid Loop deliveries that morning. |
| Sun, Mar 14 | Daylight saving time begins | Sunset jumps an hour later, to about 6:55 pm mid-month. Great for evening photos. |
| About Mar 22 | Holi | Color celebrations are usually outdoors, so watch the forecast and plan a cleanup area. |
| Sun, Mar 28 | Easter (Good Friday Mar 26) | Church halls and restaurants are busy Holy Week. Many families host brunch at home. |
March weather: what to watch out for
March in Chicago is unsettled. NWS normals for O'Hare give March an average high of 47.0°F, 2.45 inches of precipitation and about 5.5 inches of snow. That snow often falls on days when the ground is already soft from a thaw.
What to plan for:
- Soft, muddy ground. Lawns and gravel lots are often saturated in March. If any part of your event touches grass, ask about flooring or ground protection, and keep heavy deliveries on pavement.
- Two-season wardrobe. Guests arrive in coats one week and light jackets the next. Keep coat racks in the plan.
- Wind. March is windy. Tents need proper anchoring, and lightweight signs and decor need weights. See tent wind ratings and weather safety.
- Later sunset after March 14. Sunset is about 5:39 pm on March 1 and about 6:55 pm by March 15, after the clocks change. Evening events feel brighter and photos are easier.
Venue demand and booking lead times in March
March is still off-peak for most Chicago venues, with a few exceptions: St. Patrick's weekend downtown, Easter and Holy Week for church halls and restaurants, and Eid gatherings for banquet halls. Outside those, it is a good month to book a venue that is hard to get later in the year.
March is also when spring planning starts. If you are hosting a graduation party in May or June, a spring wedding, or a first communion, this is the month to lock in tents and specialty chairs. Spring Saturdays start filling early. Read our graduation party tent guide if you plan to host at home.
