A Chicago winter event can be the most atmospheric one of the year: candles, velvet, warm drinks and a fireplace. It can also be the one where a delivery truck is stuck behind a plow. The difference is planning for the season rather than hoping against it. This guide covers the numbers, the logistics and the layout.

The winter numbers

The National Weather Service publishes 1991 to 2020 monthly normals for Chicago (O'Hare):

Month Normal high Normal low Precipitation Snowfall
January 31.6 F 18.8 F 1.99 in 11.3 in
February 35.7 F 21.8 F 1.97 in 10.7 in

Normals are averages. Individual days can be far colder, and one storm can drop more than a month's normal snowfall. Treat the forecast on the day as the rule.

February averages a high of 35.7 and a low of 21.8, both well below the freezing mark overnight. 32 F freezing 31.6 18.8 35.7 21.8 January February

Light and time of day

Winter days are short. Sunset in Chicago falls before 5 p.m. in December, so a 4 p.m. ceremony ends in the dark. Plan lighting from the start: warm lamps, candles where allowed and string or pin-spot lighting. Our string light layout guide shows how to place lights.

Indoor layout for cold weather

  • Coat check. Guests arrive in heavy coats. Plan racks and space, since a 100-guest party creates a lot of outerwear.
  • Seating near entrances stays cold. Seat older guests away from doors.
  • Wider aisles. Bulky clothes need more room than the summer plan.
  • Cozy lounge. Velvet and low lighting suit the season.

For ideas, see winter wedding seating. The velvet dining chair and Louis medallion chair both look at home by candlelight. Our lounge layout guide helps with sofas and settees.

Tents in winter

A tent in a Chicago winter means heat, flooring and anchoring. Heating a tent is a project, and you should check permits and fire rules. Start with the Chicago tent permit guide and what size tent you need. We recommend indoor space unless you have a strong reason.

Keeping guests warm and safe

Heat inside is only half the story. Guests step out of a warm room into 19 degree air, so plan a short, covered path from the door to the car or rideshare pickup. Salt the entrance, put down mats and have someone watch for ice during the last hour of the party. If the venue has valet or a heated vestibule, ask whether your guests can use it.

Think about the food too. Hot drinks, soups and warm stations are popular in winter, and they need equipment and space. A hot drink station is an easy win if you add one, and our coffee urn guide shows how many urns a crowd needs.

Finally, build a gentle timeline. Winter guests arrive later and leave earlier if roads are slick. A shorter program, a clear end time and a rideshare plan make the night safer.

Planning calendar

Winter holiday weekends fill venues. Book early for December, and ask venues about snow policies and deposits. Ask if you can reschedule if a storm closes roads. We do not publish venue policies; ask yours.

Frequently asked questions

How cold is Chicago in January?

The normal high is 31.6 F and the normal low is 18.8 F, according to the National Weather Service's 1991 to 2020 normals for O'Hare. Real days can be much colder.

How much snow does Chicago get in winter?

The January normal is 11.3 inches and the February normal is 10.7 inches at O'Hare. A single storm can exceed those numbers, so plan a backup.

When does the sun set in Chicago in winter?

Before 5 p.m. in December. Plan lighting and photos for the dark. Check an almanac for your exact date.

Should I plan a winter wedding outdoors in Chicago?

Most planners choose indoor space for the main event and keep outdoor time short, like a brief photo or a toast. Heated tents need permits and planning.

How do I handle deliveries in a snowstorm?

Ask for a flexible window, clear the path and agree on a decision time with your provider. Keep a contact number for the day.

What do I do with coats at a winter party?

Rent racks or use a closed room with a host. Place it near the entrance and plan space for every guest. Our guest-count guides help you size the area.
