Planning an Event Around Lollapalooza Weekend in Chicago

How Lollapalooza closes streets near Grant Park for weeks, what that means for deliveries, hotels and guests, and how to schedule an event that weekend.

Late summer is peak wedding and party season in Chicago. It is also festival season. Lollapalooza fills hotels, packs trains and closes the streets around Grant Park. If your event is within a mile or so of the park, the festival touches your plan even if none of your guests are going. This guide shows how to plan around it, using the 2026 closure schedule as a model.

The festival ran July 30 to August 2, 2026, so the closures span about three weeks before it and several days after. We did not verify 2027 dates. Check the festival's official site and the City's closure notices for your year.

Closures lead the festival by two weeks and trail it by a week.

Who is affected

If you live or host in the Loop, South Loop, Near South Side or along the lakefront, the closures change your route. Even if you are not near the park, festival traffic and train crowds change timing for the whole weekend. Metra reported an expected increase in passengers during the festival.

Guests and hotels

Hotels near the park fill early. If you have out-of-town guests, send travel advice well before the date and consider a block at a hotel farther out. Guests going to the festival may be dressed for it and heading to different places, and a rideshare pickup can take much longer than usual. Add 30 to 45 minutes to your start time estimate only if your venue is close to the closures, and use the real traffic forecast rather than our rule of thumb.

Heat, storms and summer

Late July is hot. Chicago's normal July high is about 84.5 F and the normal August high is 82.5 F, per the National Weather Service's 1991 to 2020 normals for O'Hare. Choosing furniture on a hot festival weekend
