How Many Chairs Do I Need for My Wedding? A Simple Guide
Ceremony, reception, cocktail hour and the head table. Here's how to count chairs so no guest is left standing.

"One per guest" is the right start, but it's not the whole answer. Here's how to count.
1. Reception seating
Plan one chair per confirmed guest, plus:
- Vendors who eat with you, like your photographer, videographer and planner, if they sit at a table
- A small buffer for late RSVPs and last-minute plus-ones. Many planners add a few percent.
2. Ceremony seating
If your ceremony is in a different spot from your reception, you have two choices:
- A second set of chairs. This costs more but needs no rush during cocktail hour.
- A "flip." The same chairs are moved from ceremony to reception during cocktail hour. It costs less, but it needs enough staff and time.
Short ceremonies sometimes seat only part of the guest list, with older guests and family seated and others standing at the back. Talk it through with your venue.
3. Cocktail hour and lounge
You don't need a seat for everyone during cocktail hour. Aim for seating for a portion of your guests, especially older relatives. A lounge vignette with a few statement chairs adds style too.
4. Head table or sweetheart table
This is where a statement chair pays off. A velvet, Louis or throne chair for the couple makes the head table stand out in photos.
Quick worksheet

Mixing styles
Different areas can use different chairs: teak folding chairs for an outdoor ceremony, cross-backs for dinner and velvet at the sweetheart table. Request a quote with all of them and we'll price each area separately.
