Planning an Event Around Chicago Marathon Weekend
How the Chicago Marathon changes street closures, deliveries, venues and guest travel, and how to schedule rentals if your event falls on that October weekend.

If your wedding, fundraiser or family party lands on Marathon weekend, you are not doomed. Thousands of events happen in Chicago that weekend. But the race changes how trucks, guests and staff move. This guide uses what the City and news outlets published for 2026 as a model for what to expect. Always check the race organizers for the exact dates and closure schedule for your year.
What the closures looked like in 2026
Fox 32 Chicago's closure guide for the 2026 race reported:
- Grant Park-area streets such as Jackson Drive, Columbus Drive, Monroe Street and Roosevelt Road segments were closed before Sunday.
- Michigan Avenue (Madison Street to Roosevelt Road) closed 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. on race morning.
- Columbus Drive (McFetridge Drive to Roosevelt Road) and Roosevelt Road (Michigan Avenue to Columbus Drive) closed 4 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Along the course, closures began around 6 a.m. and reopened as the final runners passed.
- Open roads included DuSable Lake Shore Drive, inner Lake Shore Drive from Diversey Parkway to Belmont Avenue, and the expressways.
- The course extended north to Sheridan Road, west to Damen Avenue and south to 35th Street.
Dates for your year
We verified the 2026 race date and schedule, but not a published 2027 date, so check chicagomarathon.com for the current year. The race is held in October on a Sunday, and the weekend also includes runner events and an expo that bring visitors to downtown hotels.
How to schedule your rentals
- 1Step 1Check the courseIf your venue or route crosses it, treat Sunday morning as closed.
- 2Step 2Deliver earlyFriday or Saturday is safer than Sunday morning.
- 3Step 3Pick up late or MondayClosures lift in the afternoon, but traffic stays heavy.
- 4Step 4Give drivers the closure listShare the official closures with your provider.
- 5Step 5Confirm the loading spotwith your venue.
Neighborhood effects
The course passes through many Chicago neighborhoods, and the closures can cut off cross streets for hours. Check the course map before you pick a start time. Venues near the course may have limited parking, and guests may be unable to cross certain streets until runners clear. If your event is a church wedding, a brunch or a backyard party near the route, tell guests which side of the course to approach from.

Guest experience
- Hotels fill. Tell guests early and suggest options farther from the course.
- Travel time. Add buffer. A short drive can take twice as long.
- Weather. October in Chicago can be cool or warm. Pack a cold-weather backup, and see our winter wedding seating tips if the forecast turns.
- Noise and crowds. Cheering zones are lively. Tell the venue.
For outdoor seating on cool days, the velvet dining chair and cross-back chair both feel at home with fall colors. If you are planning a fall setup, count chairs with how many chairs do I need.
