From June to early September, Chicago comes outside. Patios open, lakefront parks fill and every weekend has a wedding, a graduation, a street fest or a family reunion. That energy is why summer is popular, and why it needs more planning than any other season. This guide covers the weather facts and the practical steps.

What summer weather looks like

The National Weather Service's 1991 to 2020 normals for Chicago (O'Hare):

Month Normal high Normal low Precipitation
July 84.5 F 66.4 F 3.71 in
August 82.5 F 65.1 F 4.25 in

August is the wettest of the two. These are averages. Heat waves and thunderstorms are normal enough that a plan B belongs in every summer budget.

Summer evening party timeline in Chicago A day timeline from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. in midsummer. The afternoon is the hottest period and needs shade. Dinner at about 6 p.m. is in full sun. Light and sunset

Near the June solstice the sun sets around 8:30 p.m. in Chicago. A reception that starts at 5 p.m. has a long daylight stretch, and lights come on only in the last hour or two. Our backyard party lighting ideas and string light layouts can help.

The summer calendar

Summer in Chicago means festivals and closures. Lollapalooza in late July or early August closes streets near Grant Park for weeks, and many neighborhood fests fill weekends. Read planning around Lollapalooza. Block parties and park events also peak, so see the block party permit guide and Park District permit guide.

Month Planning focus
May to June Book venues and rentals; plan for cool evenings and sudden rain
July Heat and shade; festival closures start
August Wettest summer month; storm backup
September Cooling nights; weekends fill for weddings

Feeding and watering a crowd in the heat

Food safety and hydration become the main issues at a summer event. Keep cold food in coolers or on ice and keep hot food hot, and plan a shaded, covered buffet if possible. Our buffet line flow guide shows how to keep lines short so guests are not standing in the sun. Put drink stations in several spots rather than one, so lines stay short.

Seating matters too. Guests in direct sun move to shade, so put chairs where the shade will be during the meal, not where it was at noon. Walk the site at the same time of day as your event, a week before, and see where the shadows fall.

Booking early

Peak weekends fill first: Saturdays in June, July, September and early October. If you have a date in mind, ask your venue and rental provider about availability early. We do not publish availability or deadlines; request a quote as soon as you have a date and counts.
