Chicago Alley Deliveries: Getting Party Rentals to Your Backyard

How rental deliveries work in a Chicago alley, from garage doors and dumpsters to gates and gangways, and how to plan a clear path to the backyard.

Chicago's alley grid is one of the city's best-kept logistics secrets. It keeps trash, parking and deliveries off the front street. For party rentals, it also means a short walk from truck to yard. The catch is that alleys are narrow, shared and sometimes blocked by something you did not expect. A few checks the week before save a long afternoon.

What the alley gives you

  • A direct line to the backyard instead of a carry through the house.
  • Less front-street traffic, which matters on a busy residential block or on a street with permit parking.
  • A place for the truck to stop out of the way, even if only briefly.

What can go wrong

We have not found a single citywide alley rule to quote, so treat these as practical checks rather than legal rules. Ask your alderman's office or the City if you need a formal answer.

Alley delivery path to a Chicago backyard Top-down view of a Chicago lot. A building sits at the front near the street. A backyard fills the middle and a garage sits at the back along the alley. A rental truck stops in the alley, items pass through a back gate into the yard, and an alternate route runs through a side gangway from the street. Measure the carry

Before delivery, walk the route. A 60-inch round tabletop is 5 feet across and an 8-foot banquet table is 96 inches long, so they do not fit through a gate that is under 36 inches wide unless they fold or tilt. Tables with folding legs travel flat, and chairs stack. Measure each gate, step and turn, and write the narrowest figure on the order notes.

When the alley won't work

Some Chicago lots have no alley, a gated one or one shared with a business. In those cases deliveries go through a gangway (the narrow path beside a building) or the front door. Tell your provider early, because it changes crew size and time. You may also need to reduce what you order: chairs and small tables are easier than an 8-foot banquet. Our two-flat and greystone backyard party guide shows layouts for narrow lots.

Weather and the alley

Rain turns an alley into a puddle, and a few puddles are a nuisance. Pea gravel or packed dirt alleys can be soft. Ask the provider whether they roll hand carts over uneven ground. In winter, snow plows and salt trucks can use the alley. Our Chicago winter event planning guide covers it.

The yard setup

Once the items arrive, plan the setup order. Tables first, then chairs, then linens and decor, to avoid dragging things over a finished layout. Lightweight chairs are easiest through a narrow gate. The garden folding chair and rattan garden chair both suit a yard. For the counts, see how many chairs do I need.

Frequently asked questions

Can a rental truck deliver through a Chicago alley?

Often yes, if the alley is clear and the truck fits. Tell your provider the alley width, any turns and any obstructions. If the truck cannot fit, smaller vehicles or hand carts from the street may be needed.

What if my alley is blocked on delivery day?

Call your neighbors or building manager first, then call your provider so it can adjust. If it is a City issue like construction, ask your alderman's office. We have not verified a citywide hotline, so start with your ward.

How wide does my gate need to be for event tables?

Wide enough for the folded or tilted table, with room for hands. A gate under 36 inches is tight for a banquet table. Measure it and tell your provider the number.

Is it better to deliver through the alley or the front?

The alley is shorter to the yard and avoids front-street parking issues. The front is better if the alley is blocked, gated or unpaved. Choose based on the walk and the truck access.

Do I need to be home for the delivery?

Someone should meet the truck, open gates and point to the setup spot. It does not have to be you, but it should be someone who knows the layout.

Can I use the garage for storage?

If the garage is empty and dry, yes, it is a good place to stage items before an event. Do not stack rentals behind parked cars.
