Two-Flat and Greystone Backyard Party in Chicago: Layout Guide
How to fit tables, chairs and a bar into a narrow Chicago city lot, with layouts for 20, 40 and 60 guests and tips for gangways, decks and neighbors.

A Chicago city lot is a small, specific space. Many are 25 feet wide, with the building taking up most of the front and a garage at the back. What remains is a long, skinny rectangle of grass, deck or patio. That shape rewards a plan more than it rewards a big rental order. This guide shows how to use it.
Know the space you really have
Measure your yard and subtract what is there already: the deck, stairs, grill, planters, a back porch and the walk lane to the gate. Rules of thumb: allow about 10 to 12 square feet per seated guest and 6 to 8 per standing guest, plus a walk lane at least 4 feet wide. These are planning figures, not code.
What fits: three sample plans
| Guests | Seating | Layout idea |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | Seated | Two 60-inch rounds or one long table plus a lounge corner |
| 40 | Seated, mixed | Four 60-inch rounds, a bar and a small lounge on the deck |
| 60 | Standing and sitting | Cocktail tables, a food station and seats for about half |
A 60-inch round seats 8 comfortably, so four rounds hold 32 and up to 40 tightly. For 60 guests on a narrow lot, no one should expect a full seated dinner. Mix seating with cocktail tables, and let the deck serve as a second room. Our table count guide and round table sizes help with the numbers.
Long tables or rounds?
In a skinny yard, one long table down the center looks intentional and uses the space well. Rounds are more flexible and let people talk across them. A 96-inch banquet table seats 8 to 10; a farm-style table can feel more relaxed. If the yard is under about 18 feet wide, a single long table with a lane on each side may fit where rounds will not. Our long tables vs round tables guide covers the trade-offs.
Getting items in
Gangways and alley gates decide what you can order. Check our alley delivery guide for measuring the route, and confirm gate width before you choose 8-foot tables. If the only path is through the house, ask for chairs and 48 to 60-inch tables, which are far easier to carry in than long banquets.

- 2Step 2Mark a walk lanealong one side, at least 4 feet wide.

- 4Step 4Set up the barnear the back so lines do not block the seating.

Decks, grass and uneven ground
Chicago backyards often mix a wood deck, patio pavers and a patch of grass. Chairs with narrow legs sink in grass and catch in deck gaps. Pick sturdier seats for soft ground and test one before the party. The garden folding chair is a practical choice for a crowd, while the rattan garden chair suits a relaxed table of friends. If the yard is shady and damp after rain, consider a few boards or mats under the legs.
Neighbors, noise and permits
A backyard party on private property usually does not need a Park District or special event permit. A tent over 20 x 20 feet may change that, and other rules can apply. See our Chicago special event permit guide and Chicago tent permit guide. Tell neighbors about the date, the end time and the alley deliveries. Sound carries along the alley, so set a speaker facing into your yard, not toward the next building.
Lighting for a narrow lot
Run string lights down the length of the yard, anchored to the garage and the building, to create a ceiling. Use low lights on the walk lane. Our backyard party lighting ideas have layouts that suit a skinny lot.
