Round tables are the default at almost every banquet hall in Chicago and the suburbs, and the four common sizes look close on paper. They are not close on the floor. One size up changes how many guests sit, how big the centerpiece can be and how many tables fit in the room. This guide puts the numbers side by side.

Round table size chart

Table Seats comfortably Seats tight Floor circle with chairs Table edge per guest
48 in 6 8 About 8 ft About 25 in
60 in 8 10 About 10 ft About 23 in
66 in 8 to 10 10 About 10.5 ft About 21 to 26 in
72 in 10 12 About 11 ft About 23 in

The floor circle is the table diameter plus roughly 30 inches on each side for a pulled-out chair and a person sitting down. Those are rules of thumb, so check your actual chairs. A wider chair or a throne takes more room.

48-inch rounds: small and flexible

A 48-inch round seats 6 comfortably. It suits kids, VIPs, a cake table or a sweetheart table for four. Because it is small, a 48 inch works in tight corners and as a filler where a 60 would collide with a column. It is too small for a plated dinner with a big centerpiece, and the middle of the table is only 2 feet across.

60-inch rounds: the wedding standard

The 60-inch round is the most rented size for plated weddings. At 8 guests, each person has about 23 inches of table edge, enough for a charger, bread plate, forks and two or three glasses. The 3-foot radius lets you reach across for a shared platter. For a full count of how many you need, see how many tables for 50, 100, 150 or 200 guests.

66-inch rounds: the in-between size

Not every rental company stocks 66-inch rounds. Where they exist, they work as the best of both: 8 guests get extra elbow room, or 10 guests fit if the centerpiece is low. Ask whether the linens come in a matching size. A 66-inch table needs a 126-inch round cloth for floor length.

72-inch rounds: large rooms and big guest lists

A 72-inch round at 10 guests cuts your table count by about 20 percent compared with 8 per 60-inch table. That saves linens, centerpieces and floor space in a ballroom. The tradeoff is conversation: guests on opposite sides sit 6 feet apart, which is too far to talk across. Put big families and groups who already know each other at 72s and mix newcomers at 60s.

  • Plated dinner: 60-inch rounds at 8.
  • Buffet or stations: 60 or 72 at 10, because guests carry less to the table.
  • Family style: 72-inch rounds so platters fit in the middle.
  • Cocktail and lounge mix: 48-inch rounds as accent seating.

Chairs and table size

A table of 8 with cross-back chairs feels roomy; the same 8 with wider velvet dining chairs is snug on a 60. If your chairs are wider than a standard Chiavari, consider 66 or 72 inch rounds. Our chair guide lists the style options.

Frequently asked questions

How many people sit at a 60-inch round table?

A 60-inch round seats 8 comfortably and 10 in a tight setup. For a plated dinner with a centerpiece, plan on 8.

How many people sit at a 72-inch round table?

A 72-inch round seats 10 comfortably and up to 12 when space is tight. Ten is better for plated meals.

What size is a 66-inch round table?

It has a 66-inch diameter, or 5.5 feet. It sits between the 60 and 72 sizes and seats 8 to 10 depending on the menu and chairs.

What is the best round table size for a wedding?

A 60-inch round at 8 guests is the best default. Choose 72-inch rounds only if your venue is large or your table count must come down.

How much space does a round table need?

A 60-inch round needs a circle about 10 feet across, and you need an aisle of at least 5 feet between table edges for servers and guests. A 72-inch round needs about 11 feet.

Can I mix 60 and 72 inch rounds?

Yes. Many venues mix sizes so big families sit at 72s and smaller groups at 60s. See how to mix round and long tables for layout ideas.

How tall is a round banquet table?

Standard rental tables are 30 inches tall. Cocktail and bar tables are taller; see table heights explained.
