Long Tables vs Round Tables for a Wedding: Which Is Better?
Compare long (banquet or farm) tables with round tables for weddings: guest count, space, mingling, cost drivers and floor plans for Chicago venues.

Planners in Chicago hear this question in the first call: should we do round tables or long ones? Neither is better in every room. The right answer depends on your venue shape, guest list and how you want people to talk. Use this guide to decide.
Side by side
| Round tables | Long tables | |
|---|---|---|
| Guests per table | 8 to 10 | 10 to 20 or more |
| Conversation | Easy across the table | Mostly with neighbors |
| Room shape | Square and ballroom | Long and narrow |
| Linens | One cloth per table | Fewer, longer cloths |
| Centerpieces | One per table | A continuous runner |
| Photo feel | Classic, traditional | Communal, modern |
| Flexibility | Easy to add or drop one | Harder to change |
When round tables are the right call
- Mixed groups. Eight to ten people can all talk to each other. This is why rounds are the default at weddings with friends and relatives who do not know each other.
- Ballrooms and banquet halls. Most Chicago banquet halls and hotel ballrooms plan around 60 and 72 inch rounds. See round table sizes.
- Plated service. Servers can reach every guest in a predictable pattern.
- Late RSVP changes. Dropping one guest from a round barely changes the picture.
When long tables are the right call
- Barn, loft and warehouse venues. Long open rooms suit long rows. Read barn wedding seating ideas.
- Smaller guest lists. Under 60 guests, one or two long tables feel like a dinner party.
- Family-style meals. Platters pass down a row.
- Tent weddings. Rectangular tents fit rows efficiently. See farm tables for weddings.
The space math
For 100 guests with a dance floor, a 40 x 60 foot room is a rough minimum for rounds at 10 square feet per guest, which is 1,000 sq ft, plus about 300 for the dance floor and bar. Long tables use about 8 sq ft per guest in a row layout, because less floor is lost to aisles between islands. Those are rules of thumb, so always confirm with your venue's floor plan.

Can you do both?
Yes. Many Chicago-area couples use rounds for guests and one long table for the wedding party or family. See how to mix round and long tables. A long head table in front of rounds is the traditional version; a long family table with rounds around it is the newer one.
Cost drivers
Each approach changes your rental list differently. Rounds need more linens and centerpieces. Long tables need fewer tables, but wood farm tables and special pieces are priced differently from folding banquet tables. We do not publish table prices yet, so ask for a quote with both layouts side by side; the difference can be small or large depending on the table style and the venue's delivery rules.

Chairs
The look of the table changes what chairs read best. Rounds hide most of the chair behind guests, so comfort matters. Long tables show a row of chairs, so a consistent style such as cross-back or wishbone looks deliberate.
