How to Mix Round and Long Tables at a Wedding or Event
Mix round guest tables with a long family or head table: layouts, spacing, linens and which guests go where, with a floor plan for a 120-guest room.

Many couples love the look of a long table but want guests to talk across round ones. Mixing shapes gives you both, if you plan the floor carefully. In Chicago ballrooms and suburban halls, where the room shape and columns are fixed, the mix often solves odd corners too.
Layouts that work
| Layout | Long tables | Round tables | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Head table + rounds | 1 long (10 to 12 seats) | 8 to 12 | Most weddings |
| Family table + rounds | 1 long for parents/grandparents | 8 to 12 | Multi-generation parties |
| Two side rows + center rounds | 2 long | 6 to 8 | Narrow halls |
| Banquet center + round ends | 2 to 3 long | 4 to 6 | Tents |
Step by step
- 1Step 1Choose the anchorA head table, family table or a feature long table.
- 2Step 2Place the dance floorcenter or opposite the anchor.
- 3Step 3Fill with roundsleaving 60 to 72 inches between edges.
- 4Step 4Add the serviceDJ, bar, cake, gifts.
- 5Step 5Check sightlineseveryone should see the anchor.
Who sits where
- Long table: wedding party, parents, grandparents or older guests who want a single place.
- Rounds: friends and relatives who will talk across the table.
- Kids: their own rounds nearby. See kids table ideas.
- Older guests: at the table closest to the restrooms and exits, not the loudest speaker.
Linens and styling
Use one cloth color on both shapes, or use a runner on the long table and a full cloth on rounds. A floral runner, greenery garland or candles on the long table makes it a feature. Keep centerpieces on rounds lower than the long table's, so the head table is still the focus. For cloth sizes see our tablecloth size chart.
Chair choices
When tables are different shapes, matching chairs unify the look. A row of cross-back chairs or ghost chairs across both reads as one design. You can also change the chair at the long table for emphasis, such as velvet at the head table and cross-back at the rounds. See head table setups.
Space math
Say 120 guests and 12 of them sit at the long table. That leaves 108 guests, or 14 rounds of 8 (112 seats). As a rough guide, each 60-inch round claims about a 12 x 12 foot square once aisles are shared, so 14 rounds need about 2,000 square feet. A 24-foot long table with chairs on one side needs roughly 24 x 8 feet. Add a dance floor and bar and you are looking at a room near 3,000 square feet. These are rules of thumb, so ask your venue for its floor plan and capacity at your table sizes.

Mistakes to avoid
- Too many long tables, which loses the benefits of rounds.
- A long table blocking the dance floor.
- Different heights. Use the same 30-inch table.
- Different cloth lengths. Floor length on both.
- Forgetting the extra tables, such as cake and gifts.
Our guide to long vs round tables covers the pros and cons of each shape.
Three real-world scenarios
A suburban banquet hall wedding with 140 guests. The hall owns 60-inch rounds and 8-foot banquet tables. The couple uses one long 16-foot head table for 12 people and 15 rounds of 8 for the rest. The long table is dressed with a floral runner, the rounds with simple centerpieces. The dance floor sits in front of the head table.
A loft wedding in the city with 80 guests. The room is long and narrow. The couple puts two long tables down the sides for family and friends and four rounds of 8 in the center for the wedding party's friends. The aisle between the long tables is the walkway for the processional.
A tent wedding with 100 guests. The tent is rectangular. The couple uses a 24-foot feast table down the middle for 24 people and rounds on either side. Servers walk along the outer edges, and the dance floor sits at one end.
In each case, the couple drew the layout at scale before ordering, and checked the exits with the venue.
Quick checklist
Before you finalize a mixed layout, confirm table heights match, cloth lengths match, aisles are at least 60 inches, the long table does not block the exits and every guest can see the speakers. Email your venue a sketch and ask for approval, since many venues require a final floor plan 2 to 4 weeks ahead.
