Tablecloth Size Chart: What Size Linen for Every Rental Table
The exact tablecloth size for round, banquet and cocktail tables, at lap length or floor length, with a chart you can screenshot before you order linens.

Linen orders go wrong in one of two ways: the cloth stops a few inches short and shows the table legs in every photo, or it puddles on the floor where guests catch it with their heels. Both come from the same mistake, which is guessing at a size instead of doing a quick sum. This guide gives you the sum, a chart for the tables you'll see at almost every Chicago-area venue and rental company, and the details people forget, like cocktail tables and napkins.
The one formula you need
Cloth size = table size + (drop × 2)
The "drop" is how far the cloth hangs down from the tabletop edge. You count it twice because it hangs on both sides.
Most rental tables in the US are 30 inches tall, so:
- Floor length uses a 30-inch drop. It hides the legs, storage boxes and anything you tuck under the table. It's the standard for weddings, galas and any table that shows up in photos.
- Lap length uses roughly a 10 to 15-inch drop. It's cheaper, cooler in summer and easier for guests to sit at, which is why it suits casual dinners, picnics and buffet lines that get refilled from behind.
Tablecloth size chart for common rental tables
| Table | Seats | Lap length (about 15 in drop) | Floor length (30 in drop) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 48 in round | 6 | 78 in round (or 85 in square) | 108 in round |
| 60 in round | 8 (10 tight) | 90 in round | 120 in round |
| 72 in round | 10 (12 tight) | 102 in round | 132 in round |
| 6 ft banquet (72 x 30 in) | 6 to 8 | 60 x 102 in | 90 x 132 in |
| 8 ft banquet (96 x 30 in) | 8 to 10 | 60 x 126 in | 90 x 156 in |
| 30 in cocktail, 42 in tall | standing | n/a | 120 in round, tied at the waist |
| 8 ft farm table | 8 to 10 | Usually left bare | Runner only |
If a rental company quotes you a size that doesn't match this chart, ask what height their tables are. A few use 29-inch tables, and some sweetheart tables are a different height altogether.
Round tables: 60 inch or 72 inch?
Most banquet halls around Chicago stock both. A 60-inch round seats 8 comfortably and leaves room for a centerpiece and bread plates. A 72-inch round seats 10 and saves you floor space and linens when your guest list is large. It's worth checking your table size before you pick linens, because the 120-inch and 132-inch cloths aren't interchangeable: a 120-inch cloth on a 72-inch table stops 6 inches short of the floor on every side.
If you're still deciding on the room plan, our guide to how many chairs you need walks through counting each area of the event.
Banquet tables: the two-cloth trick
Floor-length banquet cloths in 90 x 156 inches are common, but not every rental company has them in every color. When yours doesn't, ask for two cloths: a plain floor-length base in white or ivory and a lap-length overlay on top in your color. It looks deliberate, and it often costs less than a specialty color in the large size.
For a head table where guests sit on one side only, you only need the front to reach the floor. Many planners use a fitted spandex cover or a pleated skirt on the guest-facing side instead.
Cocktail tables: the tie that changes everything
Highboy cocktail tables are about 42 inches tall, so a floor-length cloth would need a 144-inch round. That's rarely stocked. The usual answer is a 120-inch round cloth gathered and tied at the waist with a sash or ribbon, which turns the extra fabric into a skirt shape. Spandex covers fitted to the table are the other option, and they hold up well in breezy outdoor spots like a lakefront terrace.
- 1Step 1Measure the tabletopor ask the rental company for the exact size.
- 2Step 2Choose the drop30 inches for floor length, about 15 for lap length.
- 3Step 3Add twice the dropto the table width (and to the length, for a rectangle).
- 4Step 4Round to the nearest stocked sizeand confirm it in your quote.
- 5Step 5Add sparesone or two extra cloths for the gift, cake and guest book tables.
Don't forget the extra tables
The guest tables are easy to count. These are the ones that get missed:
- Cake table (often a 48-inch round with a floor-length cloth)
- Gift and card table
- Guest book or welcome table
- Escort card or seating chart table
- DJ or band table (usually a 6-foot banquet)
- Dessert or late-night snack table
- Bar fronts and buffet lines
A 150-guest reception can easily have six to eight of these on top of the guest tables. Count them on your floor plan before you send a linen order.
Napkin sizes
For dinner service, a 20 x 20-inch cloth napkin is the standard. It's big enough for a decorative fold and covers a lap properly. Smaller 17 or 18-inch napkins exist but look skimpy on a formal place setting. For cocktail hour, paper cocktail napkins are typical, and many couples have them printed.

Linens and chairs work together
A floor-length cloth puts the focus on the chair, because the chair is the only thing between the tablecloth and the floor. That's where a better chair earns its keep. Clear ghost chairs let a patterned linen show through; gold infinity chairs suit sequin or satin overlays; and the warm wood of a cross-back chair works with natural linen or a bare farm table.
