Farm Table Linens: Runner Only, Bare Wood or Full Cloth?
How to dress a rental farm table with a runner, bare wood or a full cloth, with runner sizes, napkin ideas and place-setting spacing for 8 to 10 guests.

A farm table (also called a harvest or feast table) is a long, narrow wooden table, often 8 feet or longer, that seats guests at both sides and sometimes the ends. At a rustic Chicago-area wedding or a long-table dinner it replaces a room full of rounds. Because the wood is the star, the linens are small and chosen with care. This guide covers when to go bare, how to size a runner, and how to avoid the common mistakes.
Three ways to dress a farm table
Bare wood
The cleanest option. Napkins, plates and glassware sit directly on the table, and candles or greenery run down the center. It works when the table is in good condition and your venue allows food and drink directly on the wood. Ask your rental company how the table is finished, because some are sealed and some are not.
Runner only
The most popular. A runner protects the center strip, adds color and gives the centerpieces a place to sit, while the wood still shows at the edges. A runner in a natural fabric such as linen-look cotton, burlap or a soft gauze suits the style.
Full cloth
A full cloth makes sense on a banquet table, not a farm table, but it has uses. Consider it when the wood is scarred or mismatched, when you need a uniform color across several different table styles, or when a tent venue wants a protective layer. If you do, use a simple, slightly textured cloth and add a runner for dimension. Our tablecloth size chart lists banquet sizes, but most farm tables are narrower, so confirm the exact dimensions.
Runner size for a farm table
Farm tables vary, so measure or ask. A common rental farm table is 8 feet (96 inches) long and 36 to 40 inches wide, wider than a 30-inch banquet table. That extra width lets you use a slightly wider runner.
| Table | Runner width | Runner length | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft farm (96 in) | 14 to 18 in | 108 to 120 in | Most common |
| 10 ft farm (120 in) | 14 to 18 in | 132 to 144 in | Or two shorter runners |
| 6 ft farm (72 in) | 12 to 16 in | 84 to 96 in | Seats 6 to 8 |
For very long tables, consider two runners overlapping slightly in the middle, or leave a gap and place a centerpiece to bridge them. See table runner sizes and styles for the full guide to width and drop.
Place setting spacing
A farm table seats guests close together, so plan 24 inches of table length per guest as a minimum for a comfortable dinner. That means an 8-foot table seats 8 with two on each side if you add the ends, or 6 to 8 along the sides. Do not push the number up just to fit more guests; elbow room is the first thing people notice. See how many chairs do I need for related counts.
- 1Step 1Measure the tablelength and width, or confirm with your supplier.
- 2Step 2Choose bare, runner or clothbased on wood condition and venue rules.
- 3Step 3Set runner widthso 8 to 10 inches of wood show on each side.
- 4Step 4Pick napkinsin a contrasting color, since there is no cloth behind them.
- 5Step 5Add the centerpiecein the middle, low enough to talk over.
Napkins on a farm table
With no cloth, the napkin is the only fabric each guest sees. Choose a napkin color that contrasts with the wood: ivory or white on dark wood, and deep green, navy, terracotta or charcoal on light wood. Linen or cotton-blend napkins suit the look. Tuck a sprig of greenery or a place card under a simple napkin ring. Our napkin ring and placement guide shows where each piece goes.
Chairs for farm tables
Farm tables are low and long, so seating style matters. Bench seating is popular but not comfortable for a long dinner and hard to adjust for spacing. Individual chairs let you space guests evenly. A cross-back chair matches the wood look, a bentwood chair gives a softer line, and rattan garden chairs suit a boho setup. If you are planning a barn or rustic space, see barn wedding seating ideas.
Chicago planning notes
Farm tables are common at barns, vineyards and backyard tents in the western and northern suburbs. Many venues have their own tables, so check whether you are renting them or using theirs. Ask about the table surface, the legs (some have trestle legs that limit seating at the ends), and whether they allow candles directly on the wood. For a tent on grass, make sure the floor is level, because a farm table wobbles more than a banquet table.
