A table runner is the quickest way to add color, texture or a path of candles without covering the whole table. It also hides a lot of scuffs. But runners go wrong in familiar ways: too short, too wide for the centerpieces, or too long and tangled in guests' laps. Here are the numbers and styles that work for Chicago-area venues, from loft spaces to suburban banquet halls.

Runner width

A 14-inch runner centered on a 96 x 30-inch table, hanging 12 inches past each end, leaves about 8 inches on each side for plates and glassware.

A rental banquet table is typically 30 inches wide. A runner of 12 to 16 inches leaves 7 to 9 inches at each side, enough for the edge of a plate and glassware. A wider runner crowds the place settings. If you plan tall centerpieces, keep to 12 to 14 inches.

Runner length

The drop at each end is the taste decision. A short drop of 6 inches looks tidy. A medium drop of 12 inches feels designed. A long floor drop of 30 inches feels dramatic and works best on head tables. Total length equals table length plus two drops.

Table Short drop (6 in) Medium drop (12 in) Floor drop (30 in)
6 ft banquet (72 in) 84 in 96 in 132 in
8 ft banquet (96 in) 108 in 120 in 156 in
8 ft farm table 108 in 120 in 156 in
60 in round (across) 72 in 84 in n/a

Runner sizes are sold in standard lengths such as 108, 120 and 144 inches. Round up to the next stocked size instead of cutting. Our tablecloth size chart gives the base cloth sizes to pair with these.

Runner styles

Satin and polyester

Smooth and reflective, these runners suit galas and ballrooms. They show wrinkles, so ask for them pressed.

Burlap and natural linen

Rustic and textured, these are the usual choice for farm tables and barn weddings. They shed fibers, which shows on dark tablecloths. See farm table linens for how to style them.

Lace

Romantic and vintage. Lace over a solid cloth looks layered and delicate; on bare wood it shows the grain.

Velvet and sequin

Rich and heavy. Velvet suits fall and winter; sequin suits glam. Both are costlier than basic fabrics, and both need careful handling and cleaning.

Organza and sheer

Light and flowing, good for overlays on a tablecloth with a color underneath.

Round tables and runners

Runners on round tables are less common but work for 60 and 72-inch rounds. Lay one straight across the center with equal drops on both sides. For a cross layout, two runners at right angles make a plus shape with the centerpiece at the crossing. Avoid runners on small 48-inch rounds: guests have no room.

Runner or tablecloth?

A runner alone shows the table beneath. That works when the table itself is part of the look, such as a farm table with natural grain. For a rental table with a plain top, a tablecloth plus a runner looks finished. If your tables are skirted for a buffet, a runner on top softens the line. Overlays and layered linens covers more combinations.

Chicago planning notes

Chicago ballrooms and loft venues often have house linens; ask whether your runner replaces or adds to them. Outdoor tents and lakefront terraces get wind, so weight a long runner with centerpieces or tape its ends underneath. Light satin lifts off easily in a breeze.

Runner color and pattern

Color works the same way as on napkins: a runner can tone with the cloth or contrast with it. A runner one or two shades deeper than the cloth looks calm. A runner in an accent color brings the florals and napkins together. Keep patterns to one element per table. If the runner is patterned, make the cloth and napkins solid.

Runners also guide the eye. A runner that runs the full length of a long table draws a line down the room, which suits long feast tables. A short runner centered on a round table acts as a bridge between place settings and the centerpiece. Avoid placing candles on the edge of a thin runner, because wax drips cost money and hot glass can scorch delicate fabrics.

Placing centerpieces on runners

The runner is your centerpiece stage. Keep tall arrangements in the middle of the runner, and place low votives, small vases or greenery along its length. Leave a gap of at least a hand between the centerpiece and each plate so guests can pass dishes. For family-style service, reduce the centerpiece width so platters can sit on the table. If you plan to serve family-style, talk to your caterer about how many platters per table, and then choose a runner width that leaves room for them.

Frequently asked questions

What size table runner for an 8-foot table?

A runner 12 to 16 inches wide and 108 to 120 inches long. That gives a 6 to 12-inch drop on each end. For a floor-length look at a head table, go to 156 inches.

How wide should a table runner be?

12 to 16 inches on a 30-inch banquet table. Narrower looks thin and wider crowds plates and glasses.

Can I use a runner without a tablecloth?

Yes, especially on a farm table or a table with good wood. On a plain rental table with visible folds, a tablecloth underneath looks cleaner.

How many runners do I need for a wedding?

One per rectangular table. Round tables use none or one each. Add runners for the head table, the cake table and any buffet lines.

Do runners work on round tables?

Yes, on 60 and 72-inch rounds, laid across the center. Skip them on 48-inch rounds, where space is tight.

Should the runner match the napkins?

It can match, contrast or tone with them. Matching runners and napkins read as a set; a contrast gives more depth. Check your napkin colors first.
