Napkin placement is a small decision that shows up in every photo. It also affects service: servers need to reach plates, and guests need to find their napkin without disturbing the table. This guide covers the common positions, how napkin rings work, and how to coordinate everything with the rest of a place setting at a Chicago-area wedding or banquet.

Where the napkin goes

Three napkin placements on a dinner place setting Three top-down place settings show a charger plate with forks on the left and a knife and spoon on the right. In the first the napkin is left of the forks, in the second it sits on the plate, and in the third it is in a ring on the plate with a place card above. LeftOn plateIn ring
Forks sit on the left, knife and spoon on the right. The gold block marks the napkin; the small card above the last plate is the place card.

Left of the forks

The traditional formal spot. The napkin sits folded in a rectangle with the open edge facing right. It frees the plate for a menu or place card, and servers can set plates without moving it.

On the plate or charger

Common for weddings and photo-friendly tables. A folded napkin, sometimes with a ring, a menu or a sprig of greenery, sits in the center. The server removes it when the first course arrives or moves it to the left.

Under or around the flatware

Casual and buffet settings often wrap the napkin around the fork and knife, so guests pick up one bundle at the end of a line. Pocket folds do the same job; see napkin folds for events.

In a glass

A fan or pleated fold stands in a water glass. It looks formal but crowds the glassware and relaxes in humidity.

How napkin rings work

A napkin ring is a band, usually metal, wood, rope or fabric, that holds a rolled or folded napkin. Choose the ring for the style first, then size it to the napkin.

Ring style Best with Notes
Gold or brass Formal, glam, fall Warm, pairs with gold chairs
Silver Modern, winter Cool, pairs with clear chairs
Wood or rope Rustic, boho, barn Casual, pairs with burlap or linen
Fabric or ribbon Garden, romantic Light, easy to match palette
Acrylic or crystal Glam, modern Catches light

Rings hold a 20-inch napkin best when it is folded into a thin rectangle or rolled. A bulky napkin or a thick fold will not fit through a small ring. Ask your supplier for the ring's inside diameter, or test one with the napkin you plan to use.

Place cards and menus

If you use a place card or menu, decide where it goes before you place the napkin. Common combinations:

  • Ring on the napkin, place card tucked under the ring. Compact and tidy.
  • Menu on the plate, napkin on the left. Gives guests something to read as they sit.
  • Place card above the plate. Keeps the plate clean for the first course.

Do not stack three things on the plate. A napkin, a menu and a card on a charger look busy and are hard to clear.

Chicago notes

At downtown hotels and large banquet halls, the catering team often sets napkins and rings, so tell them your preferred placement in writing. At backyard tents, setup is usually a team of friends and a rental crew, so a simple placement like the left of the forks or on the plate is easier to execute. In windy tents, place the napkin under a glass, a menu or a ring, because light napkins can blow off.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the napkin go on a formal table setting?

To the left of the forks, folded in a rectangle, or on the center of the charger or plate. Either is correct. Choose one and repeat it at every seat.

Do you need napkin rings at a wedding?

No. They are a styling choice, not a requirement. A well-folded napkin on a plate looks neat on its own, and rings add polish and a way to hold a sprig or a place card.

How do I fit a napkin through a ring?

Fold the napkin into a long, thin rectangle or roll it, then slide the ring over the center. Thick fabrics need larger rings, so test before ordering.

Should the napkin be on the plate or beside it?

Either works. On the plate looks styled in photos; to the left leaves the plate clear for service. If you have a first course already plated, left of the forks is easier for servers.

Can I use a ribbon instead of a ring?

Yes. A ribbon or twine tie holds a napkin or a bundle of flatware and fits a boho or rustic style. Be sure the ribbon is secure so it does not slide off.

Who sets napkin rings at an event?

It depends on the vendor. Rental companies, caterers or decor crews can all do it, sometimes for a fee. Ask before your event and put the answer in writing.
