Textured Linens for Events: Crinkle, Lace, Velvet, Jacquard
A guide to textured table linens such as crinkle, lace, velvet, jacquard and burlap: what each looks like, when to use it and how to layer without clutter.

Plain polyester is practical, but a room full of it can feel flat. Texture is how planners add warmth and richness without changing the color palette. It also hides wrinkles and small marks, which helps on a busy catering line. This guide covers the main textured linens a Chicago-area event is likely to see, what each is best for, and how to avoid overdoing it.
The textures at a glance
What each texture does
Crinkle (crushed, accordion)
Relaxed and fun, with irregular folds that catch light. It hides wrinkles by design, and it works for garden parties, showers and casual weddings. It is usually a polyester or taffeta-like fabric.
Lace
Romantic, vintage and delicate. Lace works best as an overlay or runner over a solid base, so the pattern shows. Check for snags before the event. See overlays and layered linens.
Velvet
Rich, soft and warm. Velvet suits fall and winter, and it looks best in deep colors such as burgundy, emerald, navy and plum. It is heavy, so it hangs well, but it can crush or mark. See Chicago fall wedding linen colors.
Jacquard and damask
A woven pattern, often floral or geometric, that is part of the fabric. It looks formal and traditional, and it can be a tone-on-tone pattern that gives depth without color.
Burlap and natural linen
Coarse and earthy. Best as runners on wood tables. Burlap sheds fibers, so keep it away from dark cloths. See farm table linens.
Linen-look and slub
A smooth cloth with an irregular thread, giving a natural look without heavy wrinkles. A good middle ground.
| Texture | Mood | Best use | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crinkle | Casual, playful | Cloths, runners | Can look busy with patterns |
| Lace | Romantic | Overlays, runners | Snags, see-through base |
| Velvet | Rich, warm | Runners, napkins | Crushing, heavy weight |
| Jacquard | Formal | Cloths, napkins | Pattern clash |
| Burlap | Rustic | Runners | Shedding |
| Linen-look | Natural | Cloths, napkins | Slight wrinkles |
Layering texture without clutter
The rule is simple: one texture is the star, the rest are smooth. If the overlay is lace, the base cloth and napkins are plain matte. If the runner is velvet, the cloth is plain and the napkins are the same color family. Also vary the scale. Pair a large pattern with fine texture, not two of the same size.

Texture and lighting
Texture needs side light to show. Under flat overhead light or bright tent daylight, crinkle and jacquard can look plain. Candlelight and warm uplighting cast shadows that reveal the weave. Ask your venue about the lighting plan, and see tablecloth colors for photos and linen fabrics compared.
Texture and chairs
A woven chair, such as the cane-back or rattan garden chair, already carries texture, so a smooth cloth lets it breathe. A smooth, clear ghost chair is a good partner for lace, crinkle or velvet. An ornate Louis medallion chair needs a plain cloth.
Care and practical notes
Textured fabrics vary in care. Lace snags, velvet crushes, burlap sheds and crinkle can be hard to press. Ask your supplier how each item arrives and what the damage terms are; see linen stain and damage policies. In Chicago humidity, soft fabrics can droop on tent tables, so check them before guests arrive.
