September weather: what to watch out for
September is comfortable. NWS normals for O'Hare give September an average high of 75.5°F and a low of 57.1°F, with about 3.19 inches of rain. Early September can still be hot, and late September evenings can be cool.
What to plan for:
- Evening cool-down. It is warm at 4 pm and jacket weather by 9 pm. A few heaters or an indoor space for the late part of the night keep guests comfortable.
- Earlier sunsets. Sunset moves from about 7:26 pm on September 1 to 7:02 pm by September 15 and 6:39 pm by September 28. Plan lighting from the start of dinner.
- Less storm risk than summer, not zero. Keep sidewalls and a rain plan.

Venue demand and booking lead times in September
September and October are peak wedding months in the Chicago area, and September Saturdays are often booked a year or more ahead at popular venues. Our rule of thumb is to book tents, specialty chairs and dance floors 2 to 4 months ahead at minimum, and to reserve the venue first.
If the Saturdays you want are gone, Fridays and Sundays in September are still excellent. Labor Day Sunday is a popular choice because many guests have Monday off. Our Chicago fall wedding rentals guide covers the full list, including linens in fall colors and lighting for earlier sunsets.
