Fall is the most requested wedding season in Chicago for a reason: comfortable temperatures, rich color and dramatic light. It is also the season when planning mistakes show up fast. A reception that is perfect at 4 pm can be cold and dark at 7. This guide lays out the rental decisions that make a fall wedding work.

What fall weather means for the rental list

The NWS 1991-2020 normals for O'Hare put the September high at 75.5°F and the October high at 62.7°F. Lows are 57.1°F and 45.4°F. Rain averages 3.19 inches in September and 3.43 inches in October. Snow is a trace in October, though early November can bring flurries. See our monthly guides to September and October.

Plan the day around the light

Light and temperature across an October wedding day in Chicago Chart showing a 3 pm ceremony in 62 degree sun, golden hour photos at 4:30 pm, sunset at about 6:11 pm, dinner in a heated tent and dancing under lights after dark. 3 pmCeremony4:30Photos6:11Sunset6:30Dinner8 pmDancingSunset time for Oct 15 (calculated for 2027)
A mid-October day runs from sun to dark in under four hours, so a 3 pm ceremony leaves time for photos.

A 4 pm ceremony in October ends close to sunset. Many Chicago planners move the ceremony earlier to get photographs in good light and keep guests from sitting in the cold. If your ceremony is outdoors, consider an indoor-outdoor setup with a rain plan.

Chairs and the look

Fall palettes like rust, olive, burgundy, plum and gold suit natural wood. The cross-back chair in walnut or oak echoes the foliage. The velvet dining chair in emerald, navy or champagne brings richness to an indoor reception. The wishbone chair works for a modern look, and the cane-back suits a boho one. See boho wedding chairs and barn wedding seating ideas for room layouts. Estimates are $8 to $11 (cross-back), $18 to $25 (velvet), $14 to $18 (wishbone) and $12 to $16 (cane-back).

Tents, heat and flooring

An outdoor fall reception needs the tent to do more work. Plan sidewalls, a floor if the ground is uneven, heat that fits the tent and lighting that does not rely on daylight. Read heating a tent in fall and check the Chicago tent permit rules if your venue is in the city. For a suburban venue, call the village.

  • Sidewalls: cut wind and hold heat.
  • Flooring: protects shoes and chair legs from damp turf.
  • Heat: tent-safe heaters, with a vendor who sets them up.
  • Lighting: warm string lights and uplights.
  • Coat area: guests arrive in layers.

Linens and tabletop

Fall linens do the color work. Deep green, burgundy, rust and champagne are common. Heavier fabrics feel warm and hold up in a breeze. See chicago-fall-wedding-linen-colors for color pairings. Dinnerware with a gold rim, glass in amber or clear and gold flatware add warmth; see gold flatware trend.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best month for a fall wedding in Chicago?

Many couples choose late September or early October. The average high is 75.5°F in September and 62.7°F in October, and foliage peaks in October. Choose the date by your priorities: warmth, color or budget.

Do I need a tent for a Chicago fall wedding?

If the reception is outdoors, yes. A tent protects from rain and cold, and gives you a place for heat and lights.

What time is sunset for a Chicago fall wedding?

About 7:02 pm on September 15 and 6:11 pm on October 15. Plan the ceremony earlier in October.

What chairs look best for a fall wedding?

Warm wood or velvet chairs: cross-back, windsor, wishbone or velvet. Choose by venue and budget.

How early should I book fall wedding rentals?

Nine to twelve months ahead for prime Saturdays. Tents, chairs and linens sell out first.

What colors are popular for fall wedding linens?

Rust, burgundy, olive, champagne and gold. Pick one or two and keep the rest neutral.

Will it be too cold for guests?

It can be after dark. Plan heat, wraps and hot drinks.

Cold-weather comfort details

Guests at a fall wedding remember being cold more than almost anything else. Put a few heaters near the dance floor, not just the dining area, since people dance in dresses and suits and stand around at the edges. Ask the venue about a coat check, and put a basket of wraps near the ceremony. Serve something warm at the cocktail hour, such as cider or coffee, and keep the doors closed whenever possible. These small decisions cost little and change the whole day.
