Spring is full of promise in Chicago, and it is also the most unpredictable wedding season. The lawn can be green in April and frozen in the shade. Evenings can be cold in May. The couples who enjoy their day are the ones who planned for both.

Ground conditions

Why spring ground matters for chairs and tents Side view comparing a thin chair leg sinking into soft spring turf with a chair on flooring panels that spread the weight, with labels Soft turf and With flooring. Soft turf: legs sinkOn flooring: stable
Thin chair legs sink in damp turf; flooring spreads the load.

Spring ground is often soft. Thin chair legs sink, tents are harder to stake and guests in heels struggle. Ask about flooring or a gravel and paver base, and check our guide to chairs on grass, sand and gravel. If your ceremony is on grass, consider wider-footed chairs or an aisle runner on a firm path.

Chairs for spring

Ghost chairs look airy against green lawns, cane-back chairs feel organic, and the rattan garden chair suits a garden ceremony. Estimates are $10 to $14, $12 to $16 and $12 to $16. See ghost chairs wedding styling.

Ceremony versus reception

If the ceremony is outdoors and the reception is in a tent or hall, plan how chairs move. Our ceremony vs reception chairs guide explains whether to rent one set or two. Spring ceremonies should start earlier than the sun-driven summer schedule; a 4 pm start gives a few hours before the evening chill.

Booking spring

May Saturdays book early, and tents are the first to go. Ask your venue about its tent policy and whether a permit applies. The Chicago Park District, for example, needs a permit for tents of any size in its parks and a separate City permit for tents larger than 20 by 20 feet. Our tent permit guide has the details.

Linens, lighting and the look of spring

Spring palettes lean soft: ivory, blush, sage, dusty blue and pale yellow. Lightweight linens look fresh but can lift in a spring breeze, so ask for weights or fitted covers on outdoor tables, and see our tablecloth size chart so floor-length cloths are the right size. Dinnerware in white or with a thin gold rim reads clean on a spring table, and clear glassware lets flowers do the color work.

Lighting matters more than people expect. Sunset reaches 8:02 pm by mid-May, but a tent is dim long before that, and an April reception loses the sun by 7:30 pm. Plan warm string lights over the dining area and uplights on the tent poles, and add a few lanterns along the path from the ceremony. If the ceremony is outdoors and the reception is in a tent, give guests a lit route between the two.

Guest comfort in spring

Comfort is the most common spring complaint. Mornings and evenings are cold, afternoons can be warm and a wet lawn is hard on dress shoes. A few simple additions help: a basket of wraps or pashminas by the ceremony, a coat rack by the tent door, hot coffee or cider at cocktail hour and a clear path of flooring from parking to the entrance. If you have older guests, seat them close to heat and close to the restrooms, and give them a few chairs with arms.

A last word on spring

Spring weddings reward flexibility. Choose a venue that has an indoor option, keep the schedule loose, and put the weather decision in writing with every vendor. Warm colors and plenty of blankets handle chilly guests, and a tent with sidewalls makes the room feel finished. If you are still comparing seasons, our fall wedding rentals guide shows what changes in September and October.

On the practical side, walk the site in the same week of the year you plan to marry if you can. Look for low spots where water collects, shade that stays cold, and the path the delivery crew will take. Those observations are worth more than a forecast three months out.
