Chairs on Grass, Sand and Gravel: What Works and How to Prevent Sinking
How rental chairs behave on grass, sand and gravel at outdoor events near Chicago, which styles to pick, and how flooring, plywood and layout stop sinking.

Every outdoor wedding photo shows the same quiet problem if you look closely: a chair leaning slightly, a row dipped into the lawn, a guest rocking on the legs. It happens because a seated adult's weight lands on four small points, and soft ground gives way under small points. This guide explains what each surface does to chairs, which of ours cope, and how to fix soft ground with cheap, simple steps. It applies to lawns in the Chicago suburbs, forest preserves, lakefront spots and backyards alike.
What each surface does
- Dry, firm grass. Most outdoor-friendly chairs sit fine for a ceremony. Mowed, level lawns do best.
- Wet grass. Soil softens quickly in spring and after rain. Legs sink and chairs tilt back.
- Sand. Legs sink unevenly, and sand works into joints and hinges. It is hard on folding chairs.
- Gravel. Chairs wobble because legs rest on loose stone, and slim legs can shift when someone sits.
Which chairs cope
Our catalog marks seven chairs as outdoor-friendly: cross-back, ghost, rattan, infinity, shell, Windsor and the garden folding chair. Outdoor-friendly means the material tolerates the weather, not that every ground works.
| Chair | On firm grass | On soft ground | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garden folding | Good | Needs flooring | Slats and light weight |
| Cross-back | Good | Needs flooring | Wood legs sink when wet |
| Windsor | Good | Needs flooring | Wide stance helps a little |
| Shell | Good | Needs flooring | Light, stackable |
| Infinity | Fair | Avoid | Slim metal legs |
| Ghost | Fair | Avoid | Slim legs, scratches |
| Rattan | Fair | Needs flooring | Weave should stay dry |
If you need a ceremony on soft turf, a flooring layer is better than switching chairs. If you cannot add flooring, choose the garden folding or the cross-back, which are the sturdiest stackable options. See garden folding vs white plastic chairs for how the folding chair handles it.
Fixes that work
- Plywood strips. Sheets of plywood under each row keep legs from sinking. They can be hidden with a runner or leaves.
- Interlocking flooring. Panels of plastic or wood form a firm base for rows or a whole tent.
- Chair pads or feet. Flat disc feet spread the weight on soft ground. Ask if your rental company can supply them.
- Aisle runner. A simple fabric runner doesn't fix the ground, but protects the aisle itself.
- Tent flooring. If you rent a tent, floor it. Ask the tent company about subfloors for uneven or soft ground.
- 1Step 1Walk the siteafter rain and press your heel into the ground.
- 2Step 2Pick the firmest, flattest areafor the seating block.
- 3Step 3Choose a chairsuited to that ground from the table above.
- 4Step 4Add a baseof plywood or flooring if the ground gives.
- 5Step 5Test one rowwith a person sitting before you set the rest.
Chicago-area notes
Spring rain and thaw can leave Chicago-area lawns soft for days. Lakefront and beach spots add sand and wind. If your ceremony is at a park, a forest preserve or a beach, check with the park district or forest preserve district that manages it about permits, vehicle access and what can be set up. Rules differ by location, so ask the managing agency before you plan. Our guide to outdoor event chairs and Chicago weather covers wind and temperature, and ceremony vs reception chairs helps you split chairs by surface.
For fall and early spring ceremonies, leaves, damp ground and low temperatures also make a base layer sensible. A dry plywood strip is both a safety measure and a way to keep dresses clean.
