Garden venues give you something no ballroom can: real plants, seasonal color and photos that look different every month. They also come with rules, because the plants and the public come first. Here is what to check before you book a conservatory, botanic garden or arboretum for a wedding, shower, gala or milestone party near Chicago.

Garden venues around Chicago

  • Garfield Park Conservatory, on the West Side, and Lincoln Park Conservatory, on the North Side, are historic glass houses that offer indoor gardens all year. See our Lincoln Park area guide.
  • Chicago Botanic Garden, in Glencoe on the North Shore, near Highland Park and Wilmette.
  • The Morton Arboretum, in Lisle, near Naperville and Downers Grove.
  • Cantigny Park, in Wheaton, with formal gardens.

Each runs its own private event program with its own spaces, rules and approved vendors. Both conservatories are booked through the Chicago Park District's special event venue program, which, when we checked in November 2026, required caterers and rental suppliers from the district's approved lists. Check each venue's event page for current details; this guide covers the questions to ask.

Indoor conservatory vs outdoor garden

Conservatory (indoor glass house) Outdoor garden or arboretum
Season Year-round Mostly May to October
Weather risk Low, but warm and humid inside Rain, heat, wind and cold evenings
Space Paths between plant beds; often tight Lawns and terraces; more room
Rentals Smaller footprint pieces Tents, flooring, heaters, full setups
Decor rules Strict around plants Strict around beds and trees

Inside a glass house, the plants set the climate, so it can feel warm and humid, especially on a sunny day. Ask what temperature to expect and plan for guests in formal wear. Outdoors, the usual Chicago weather plan applies: a tent or indoor backup from April to October.

The questions to ask

  1. Approved vendors. Many garden venues require caterers and sometimes rental companies from an approved list. Ask whether outside chairs, linens and decor are allowed.
  2. Plant-safe decor. Ask about candles and open flame, confetti, loose petals, glitter, and anything that touches plants or beds.
  3. Staking and weight. Tents and heavy items may be limited near root zones and irrigation. Ask what anchoring is allowed.
  4. Public hours. Some spaces are open to visitors until a set time, which affects setup and photos.
  5. Rain and cold plan. Which indoor room or tent is reserved for you if the weather turns?
  6. Load-in route. Paths in gardens are narrow; ask where trucks stop and how far items travel.
  7. Photo rules. Ask whether your photographer needs a permit for portraits elsewhere on the grounds.

Rentals garden venues usually need

Garden venues often look best with light, natural pieces: rattan garden chairs, cross-back chairs or clear ghost chairs that let the plants show. Outdoors, plan tents, flooring over grass, heaters for spring and fall evenings and lighting for after sunset. Our garden wedding chairs and decor and garden party layout guides go deeper.

Frequently asked questions

Can you have a wedding at a Chicago conservatory?

Yes. Garfield Park and Lincoln Park conservatories are Chicago Park District special event venues that host weddings and private events. The district sets the hours, security, fees and approved caterer and rental lists, so check its current rules before you plan rentals.

What is the best season for a garden wedding near Chicago?

Late May, June and September are the most reliable for outdoor gardens. Conservatories work all year and are a strong winter option.

Can I bring my own rental chairs to a botanic garden venue?

It depends on the venue. Some allow outside rentals with set delivery rules, and some require approved vendors. Ask before you choose chairs.

Are candles allowed at garden venues?

Often only in enclosed holders, or not at all near plants. Ask for the venue's written decor rules, which may also cover petals, confetti and glitter.

Do I need a tent at an outdoor garden venue?

Plan for one or for a reserved indoor room. Chicago weather from April to October can bring rain, storms and cold evenings, so the backup should be booked, not hoped for.
