Ghost chairs are the most polarizing option on the Chiavari-alternative list. Done well, they let your florals, linens and architecture carry the room. Done poorly, they look like a hotel banquet from 2012.

Where they shine

  • Rooms with something to show. Exposed beams, a stained-glass window or a dramatic floral installation all benefit from a chair that stays out of the way.
  • Dense, colorful tablescapes. When the table is the star, a transparent chair keeps the eye on it.
  • Small spaces. Clear chairs make a tight room feel less crowded.

How to style them

  1. Add warmth. Pair them with wood tables, linen runners and candlelight so the look doesn't feel cold.
  2. Mind the floor. Chair legs are visible, so consider the carpet or flooring color behind them.
  3. Use cushions sparingly. A thin seat pad in a neutral tone adds comfort without ruining the see-through effect.
  4. Skip the shine overload. Mirrors, gold flatware and ghost chairs together can read as too much. Pick one reflective element.

When to choose something else

If your venue is already visually quiet, such as a plain white tent, a transparent chair has nothing to frame. A textured chair like rattan or cross-back gives the room more character.

Frequently asked questions

Are ghost chairs comfortable?

They are firm and smooth, which is fine for a dinner of two or three hours. A clear or white seat cushion adds comfort without hiding the look.

Do ghost chairs work outdoors?

Yes, on level ground. Acrylic does not mind light rain but shows scratches and water spots, so wipe them before guests sit and avoid soft grass where legs sink.

What linens go with ghost chairs?

Floor-length linens in a strong color or texture work best, because the chair shows everything around it. Sequins, velvet and bold florals look especially good through clear chairs.
