October is peak color, peak photography and, for many couples, peak wedding season. It is also the month when the weather gets serious: the afternoon feels like fall and the night feels like winter. Here is what that means for rentals.

October weather

NWS normals for O'Hare give October an average high of 62.7°F and an average low of 45.4°F, with 3.43 inches of precipitation and 0.2 inches of snow. The average high is 12 degrees lower than September and 14 higher than November. A Saturday can bring 75 degrees, or a cold rain at 48.

Early sunsets

Sunset is about 6:34 pm on October 1 and about 6:11 pm on October 15 (calculated for 2027). By October 31 it is about 5:47 pm, still under daylight saving time. Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 7, 2027, which jumps sunset an hour earlier. A 5 pm ceremony in October ends right around sunset, so lighting and guest visibility are a real design topic.

Chairs that fit October

Warm tones photograph beautifully against fall foliage. The cross-back chair in walnut, the windsor spindle chair in antique white and the velvet dining chair in emerald or navy all suit the season. Estimates are $8 to $11 for cross-back, $9 to $12 for windsor and $18 to $25 for velvet, with your quote confirming. Velvet is pretty but not for a damp lawn; keep it under a tent or indoors.

Footing in fall

Wet leaves are slippery and soft ground swallows chair legs. Walk the route guests will take from the parking to the tent, and add a stable path. A tent floor is worth considering for any October event on turf.

Halloween weekend and city events

Halloween is Sunday, October 31, 2027, so the Saturday before it is a costume-party weekend. Large city events can close streets and slow delivery, so ask your rental company about delivery windows if your venue is downtown, and check the city's event calendar for road closures on your date.

Fire rules

Fall events often include candles, fire pits or heaters. Check venue rules before planning open flame. Our candles at venues guide explains how to ask.

Lighting an October evening

Because the sun is gone by 6:30 pm, October lighting does more work than it does in summer. Start with the path from parking to the entrance, since guests arrive as the light fades. Add warm string lights over the dining area, uplights on tent poles or trees, and small table lights that do not need open flame. Warm light at about 2700K reads as candlelight and flatters skin; cool white makes a fall tent look like a parking lot. Ask your vendor about power: heaters, lights, DJ and caterer all draw from the same circuits, and tripping a breaker mid-toast is a known way to ruin a good evening. Our event power needs checklist helps you add up the load.

A note on comfort for older guests

Cold air and damp ground hit older guests harder. Seat grandparents closest to the heat and the restroom, away from the tent door, and give them chairs with arms if possible. Put a few blankets in a basket by the entrance. Keep the walkway clear of leaves and cords, and ask the crew to remove tripping hazards before guests arrive.

How much rain does Chicago get in October?

About 3.43 inches at O'Hare.

Usually yes after sunset. The average low is 45.4°F.

What colors work for October events?

Emerald, navy, rust, burgundy and warm wood tones. See our fall wedding rentals guide.

When does daylight saving time end in 2027?

Sunday, November 7, 2027, so sunsets jump an hour earlier in early November.

More October planning notes

Because October light changes so quickly, ask your photographer for a timeline that works backward from sunset. Hold family portraits before the ceremony if the ceremony is late. If your venue has an indoor option, keep it as plan B until 48 hours before the event. If your guest list includes older relatives, consider seating that sits close to the heat and away from the door.

If you are choosing between early and late fall, read our November planning guide to see how much changes after daylight saving time ends.
