A May wedding on a Chicago patio can feel like summer at 4 p.m. and like early April at 8 p.m. Heaters make shoulder seasons work. The question is how many. Manufacturers often claim coverage diameters that assume still air and mild temperatures. Real events have breezes, open sides and guests who wander. Use this guide to turn a claim into a plan.

Why the label is optimistic

Patio heaters work by radiating heat to people and objects in front of them. Radiant heat does not warm the air much, so wind blows the warmth away and the effect depends on distance and direction. A heater's output is rated in BTUs per hour, and common propane units fall in the tens of thousands of BTUs. The coverage claim on the box assumes ideal conditions, so treat it as the best case.

A simple sizing method

  1. Count seated guests and mingling areas.
  2. Give one heater to every 8 to 12 seated guests. Use the lower end if it will be cold or windy, the higher end if it will be mild.
  3. Add one heater for each bar, door or entrance where guests queue.
  4. Add a spare, because a unit that runs out of fuel needs a swap.
Guests Mild evening (about 55 F) Cold or windy evening
40 seated 4 5 or 6
80 seated 7 to 8 10
120 seated 10 to 12 15
Cocktail hour, 100 standing 6 to 8 10 to 12

These counts are planning rules of thumb, not engineering results. Ask your supplier to confirm for your layout.

Placement rules

  • Distance from guests. Place the heater so the top of the reflector is not within arm's reach, and guests cannot bump it. Follow the manufacturer's distance charts.
  • Height of the head. Tall pyramid heaters shine down. Table-top units are for smaller groups.
  • Distance from combustibles. Keep heaters away from tent fabric, decor and flammable materials. Manufacturer manuals specify clearances, and tent companies and fire officials set their own, which may be stricter.
  • Stable ground. Level, firm surfaces. Soft grass can tilt a tall base.
  • Out of the walkway. A tripped heater is a hazard.

For tent-specific questions, read tent heater vs patio heater.

Fuel

Propane tanks supply many patio heaters. A typical unit has a tank inside the base. Run time per tank depends on the heater setting and size. Ask your supplier for the figure for the model delivered. For a four-hour event, confirm that each unit can run the whole time or plan swaps. Never store or swap tanks around guests or inside a tent. Cylinders belong outdoors, according to most safety guidance, and local fire officials may have additional rules.

Electric and infrared options

Electric infrared heaters are quieter and fuel-free, but they need heavy power. A single unit may draw as much as an entire circuit. See generator sizing and event power needs before you commit. Electric heaters are often used in tents with a proper power supply.

Other ways to feel warmer

Heaters are only one tool.

  • Add windbreaks such as a solid fence, a hedge, or tent sidewalls.
  • Provide blankets or shawls at the entrance.
  • Serve warm drinks. Hot cider and coffee help more than people expect.
  • Use chairs with cushions so guests are not sitting on cold surfaces.
  • Time the event so the ceremony falls during the warmest part of the day.

Chicago notes

Lakefront and open-prairie wind can overwhelm radiant heaters, so a Chicago May or October evening may need more units than the chart suggests. Some municipalities and venues regulate propane use, especially in tents and on rooftops. Always ask your village, venue and tent company before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

How many patio heaters do I need for 50 guests?

Plan about 5 to 7 heaters for 50 seated guests on a mild evening, and more if it is windy or cold. Place them between tables.

How far does a patio heater reach?

The labeled coverage is a best case. In real conditions expect useful warmth within about 6 to 8 feet. Wind shortens it.

Can I use a propane patio heater in a tent?

Only if the tent company and local fire rules allow it, and only models designed for it. Many tents prohibit them. Ask first.

How long does a propane tank last on a patio heater?

It depends on the model and setting. Ask your supplier for the run time and plan a swap for longer events.

Are electric heaters better than propane?

They are quieter and have no fuel, but they need substantial power. Use them where you have circuits to spare.

How cold is too cold for an outdoor event?

There is no fixed line. Below about 50 F at night, many guests need heaters, blankets and a wind block. Plan for comfort, not just survival.
