Outdoor Events in Chicago in August: Weather and Rentals
August in Chicago averages 82.5°F with 4.25 inches of rain and the most mosquitoes. Plan sunset, shade, bugs and storms for an outdoor August event.

August is deep summer in Chicago: humid, full of festivals and weddings, and just starting to give evenings back to the dark. The days are still hot, but the light is changing and so is the schedule. Here is what to expect and what to rent.
August weather by the numbers
At O'Hare, the NWS normals give August an 82.5°F average high, a 65.1°F average low and 4.25 inches of precipitation. It is slightly cooler than July, but humidity stays high, and heavy thunderstorms are common. Overnight lows near 65 degrees make evenings comfortable for most guests.
Light is changing
Sunset is about 8:10 pm on August 1 and about 7:53 pm on August 15 (calculated for 2027), then keeps sliding earlier. That is almost 40 minutes of daylight lost in two weeks. A reception planned in July with lights off until 9 pm needs to switch the plan in late August. Think of August as the month to start using lighting on a regular basis.
Bugs, humidity and storms
Mosquito season runs through the month. The Illinois Department of Public Health's "three R's" advice is: reduce standing water, repel with an EPA-registered repellent and report stagnant water. West Nile cases usually peak in August and September, so August is when to take bug planning seriously. See our mosquito and bug guide.
Humid heat affects food and linens as well. Keep cold food on ice, plan covered buffet lines and choose breathable fabrics. Our keeping food cold guide covers the details.
An August seating plan
A ceremony facing west puts the low sun in guests' eyes during vows. Turn the layout, or schedule the ceremony later. Our outdoor chairs and weather guide covers how chairs sit on turf.
Rentals for August
- Tent or shade structures, with sidewalls that roll up for airflow.
- Fans or misting for the dinner period.
- Lighting, because dark arrives earlier. Our string lights guide helps with layout.
- Bug control such as citronella candles (check venue rules on open flame), fans and repellent stations.
- Chairs with open seats and weatherproof finishes. A garden folding chair at an estimated $5 to $7 suits big casual parties, and a ghost chair looks cool in the heat.

Permits and public spaces
The Chicago Park District needs a Special Event Permit for outdoor gatherings of 50 or more, and for tents, alcohol, amplified sound and inflatables. Forest preserves vary: DuPage County prohibits alcohol, while Lake County allows it for drinkers 21 and older, with rules about parking areas. See our forest preserve events guide.
Food, drink and service in August heat
Hot, humid weather changes the catering plan more than most hosts expect. A buffet that sits for 90 minutes in an August tent is a food safety problem, so ask your caterer how they hold hot and cold food and where the chafing dishes and ice sit. Shorten the line by opening two serving sides instead of one. Our guide to chafing dishes for a buffet explains how many you need.
Guests drink more in the heat than a standard bar plan assumes. Add water stations and a non-alcoholic option, put ice in more than one place and restock before the toast, not after. Glassware breaks and sweats on a hot lawn, so many planners switch to sturdy stemless options for outdoor bars; see our note on plastic versus glass at outdoor events when you are in a park that restricts glass.
A simple August checklist
- Confirm the sunset time for your exact date and set the lights to match.
- Put every seat in shade by the time guests sit down.
- Place the bar and the water in the shade as well.
- Schedule the first ice delivery as late as the caterer allows and the second for mid-event.
- Walk the site the morning of the event and look for standing water, wasp nests and low branches over the seating.
- Choose a drop-dead time for the storm decision with your vendors.
