Forest Preserve Events Near Chicago: DuPage, Lake and Will Rules
Planning a party at a forest preserve shelter near Chicago? See what DuPage, Lake and Will County allow for alcohol, tents, inflatables and rentals.

Forest preserves are among the prettiest places to host a party near Chicago, and they are the places where rental plans most often collide with the rules. A bounce house that is fine at home can be banned. A wedding-style canopy can exceed the size limit. This guide compares what DuPage, Lake and Will County say, and tells you who to call about Cook and Kane.
Compare the rules
The table below summarizes what each district's own pages said when we checked them. Rules and fees change, and each shelter has its own page, so confirm on the district's website before you rent anything.
| Topic | DuPage County | Lake County | Will County |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alcohol | Prohibited | Allowed, 21 and older, not within 100 ft of parking | May be served, not sold |
| Tents or canopies | Private canopies up to 200 sq ft generally allowed; larger needs approval | Not covered in the FAQ, ask | 10 x 10 tents approved; larger than 20 x 20 prohibited |
| Inflatables | Prohibited | Dunk tanks, petting zoos, pony rides prohibited | One bounce house per permit from an approved vendor |
| Caterers | Allowed, serve within reserved area; food trucks not allowed | Must be licensed by the district | Food trucks allowed, one per permit |
| Permit threshold | Over 25 people | Shelter reservation | Picnic reservation |
These summaries come from district web pages and may be out of date. Cook County Forest Preserves and Kane County Forest Preserves have their own rules that we did not verify here; call them before you plan.
DuPage County: no alcohol, no inflatables
DuPage requires a picnic permit for groups over 25 people, and says to apply at least three full business days ahead. It lists alcoholic beverages and inflatables among the prohibited items. Signs and decorations must be free-standing, with nothing taped or tied to trees or shelters. Generators should sit on platforms to protect grass, and musical performers, DJs and microphones fall under special-use rules. Fees are nonrefundable, even for weather. Weddings and ceremonies need a special-use permit requested at least four full calendar weeks ahead.
Lake County: alcohol with limits
Lake County's FAQ says alcohol is permitted for drinkers 21 and older, but not on or within 100 feet of any parking area. Caterers must be licensed by the district, and food you bring yourself or have a restaurant deliver does not need a licensed vendor if you serve it. The rental fee covers use until sunset, which matters for evening plans. Dunk tanks, petting zoos and pony rides are not allowed. Music rules vary by site.
Will County: more amenities, with limits
Will County lists approved amenities for a shelter permit: extra tables and chairs near the shelter, up to two generators, one portable latrine, a food or beverage truck parked in the lot and one bounce house per permit from a district-approved vendor. Tents larger than 20 by 20 feet are prohibited. Amplified music and DJs are limited to eight specific shelters.
A frame tent for a 50-person party is usually 20 by 40 feet (800 square feet), which exceeds both limits. Ask the district what it permits before you spend time on a tent plan. DuPage rents its own 20 by 30 canopy for a fee (setup and takedown included), and that may be the right route there.
What to rent for a preserve shelter
- Chairs and tables: Will County approves extra tables and chairs near the shelter. Pick chairs with wide feet for uneven ground. See chairs on grass, sand and gravel.
- Linens: tie-down clips for wind.
- Shade: only what the district approves.
- Lighting: battery-powered lanterns. See battery-powered event lighting.
- Restrooms: confirm what the preserve provides; see how many portable restrooms.
The garden folding chair (about $5 to $7) and the cross-back chair (about $8 to $11) are both easy to carry from a lot to a shelter.
