Farm Venue Weddings Near Chicago: What to Rent and Ask
Hosting an event at a farm venue near Chicago? Learn what to ask about gravel, restrooms, power and rain, and which rentals to bring in.

A farm wedding or party near Chicago is a field, a driveway and an idea. Some farm venues are polished event sites with a finished barn, restrooms and a coordinator; others are working farms that rent a lawn and leave you the rest. Before you fall in love with the pictures, find out which kind you have. This guide is about the farm itself (for barn seating layouts, see our barn wedding seating ideas).
Ask these questions before you sign
| Area | Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Parking | Where, what surface, how many cars? | Gravel and grass drain slowly after rain |
| Restrooms | Flush or portable, how many? | Plan for guest count |
| Power | Which outlets, how many amps? | Lights, DJ, caterer, heat |
| Water | Is there a spigot for caterers? | Wash and prep |
| Weather | Is there an indoor space? | Rain and heat plan |
| Noise | What time must music stop? | Rural rules vary |
| Vendors | Open list or required list? | May include rentals |
| Access | Can a truck reach the site? | Delivery and teardown |
Get every answer in writing. If the farm requires its own rental company, ask for the list. If it allows outside vendors, send the venue the rental list and delivery plan early.
Site map thinking
Draw this yourself on the venue's map. Mark where trucks unload, where the caterer works, where guests walk from parking to the ceremony and where the restrooms are. The best farm layouts keep the service path away from guests, and keep a firm path from parking to the seating for strollers, walkers and heels.
Surfaces and chairs
Grass, gravel, packed dirt and old concrete all behave differently with 100 chairs. Thin legs sink; wide feet and flooring spread weight. Chairs on gravel tilt. Ask the venue about the surface before you pick chairs, and read our guide to chairs on grass, sand and gravel. For a rustic look, the cross-back chair in natural oak ($8 to $11 estimated) and the windsor chair ($9 to $12) match wood tables. The wishbone chair works for modern farm style. See our farm table guide for long tables.

What farm venues usually do not include
- Tables and chairs: some provide them, many do not.
- Kitchen: your caterer may need a prep tent. See catering prep tent and back of house.
- Lighting: a field is dark. See string light layouts.
- Power: you may need a generator. See generator size for events.
- Climate control: heat, fans or both.
- Dance floor: grass is uneven. See outdoor dance floor on grass.
- Trash: farms need extra hauling plans.
Rain and heat
A barn or indoor room is the backup. Without one, you need a tent. A farm field can be exposed to wind and sun, and tent anchoring depends on the ground; ask your tent vendor how they anchor in your soil. If the field has livestock or crops nearby, ask about bugs and smell, and see our mosquito and bug guide.
Delivery to a rural address
Rural delivery takes longer and needs clear directions. Ask the venue whether a box truck can reach the site, whether the driveway is too narrow, and what happens after rain. Share a pin and a contact number with the rental company, and confirm gate codes. If the venue is far from our service area, ask for a delivery estimate before you book; our base is St. Charles, and we serve Chicago and the suburbs. See chair rental delivery to Chicago suburbs.
