Wigilia Setup: Polish Christmas Eve Dinner for a Big Family
Set the table for Wigilia, the Polish Christmas Eve dinner, with long-table seating, the extra place setting, serving ware for 12 dishes and a Chicago plan.

Wigilia is the Polish Christmas Eve supper, and in Chicago it is a big night. The city has one of the largest Polish communities in the United States, and neighborhoods like Avondale and Jefferson Park know the dinner well. Families often grow past what a dining room can hold. Grandparents, cousins and friends come from the suburbs, and a table for 8 turns into a table for 24. This guide covers how to set the table, what to rent, and how to plan the evening. Traditions differ by family and by region of Poland, so use what is true in your home and skip the rest.
The traditions that shape the table
These are widely shared, though not universal.
- The first star. The meal begins after the first star appears in the evening sky. Children often watch for it. On Thursday, Dec 24, 2026 in Chicago, sunset is around 4:20 to 4:30 pm, so the dinner often starts in the late afternoon or early evening.
- Opłatek. Before eating, everyone shares a thin wafer with each person at the table, one at a time, with good wishes. This takes time and means people stand and move. Leave space behind chairs.
- Meatless dishes. Wigilia is a meatless meal. Many families serve 12 dishes, one for each of the 12 apostles. Some serve 7, 9 or 13. Typical dishes are beet soup with small dumplings, pierogi, fish such as herring and carp, and a sweet dish with poppy seed.
- An extra place. An empty setting stays at the table for an unexpected guest, a traveler or a family member who is gone. Some families treat it as a seat for anyone who might arrive.
- Hay under the cloth. Some families put a little hay under the tablecloth to recall the manger. It is a small detail, and not every household does it.
Seating a long table
A single table is the heart of Wigilia, because the family eats together at once. A long table lets everyone see everyone. If your room cannot fit one table, two joined rows work, as long as the head of the family and the empty place are easy to see.
An 8-foot banquet table seats 8 to 10, and a rule of thumb is 24 inches of edge per person. Three 8-foot tables end to end make 24 feet, which fits up to 12 per side at 24 inches each. For 20 guests that leaves elbow room, with the head of the family and the empty place at the ends. A 30-inch table is a standard width. If you want a wider table for serving dishes down the middle, ask about 36-inch tables. Check the long-table guide, table spacing, and the tables page.
Leave at least 36 inches behind the chairs, and 48 inches where people will pass with dishes. Opłatek means people get up, so give them room.
Linens: white, with room for hay
A white cloth is traditional. Many families add a second layer or a runner. To cover the hay and keep it from shifting, use a cloth that drops to the floor. A 6-foot banquet table takes a 90 x 132-inch cloth, and an 8-foot takes a 90 x 156-inch. See the tablecloth size chart. For a long run, use several cloths overlapped at the center with a runner on top. See linens.
Keep a lot of cloth napkins on hand. Beet soup stains. Cloth napkins in a dark red or white are fine, but test a sample for stain care.
Serving ware and plates for 12 dishes
A dozen dishes means a lot of small plates and bowls on the table at once. You will use more serving pieces than you expect.
| Item | Rule of thumb | For 20 guests |
|---|---|---|
| Soup bowls | 1 per guest | 20 to 24 |
| Dinner plates | 1 per guest, plus a spare | 24 |
| Small plates or salad plates | 2 per guest for herring, salad and dessert | 40 |
| Serving bowls | 1 per dish, 2 for big groups | 12 to 18 |
| Platters | 1 per fish or pierogi dish | 4 to 6 |
| Serving spoons and forks | 1 per dish | 14 to 18 |
| Wine and water glasses | 2 per guest | 40 |
Rules of thumb only. Your menu, and whether you serve family style, change these numbers. See family-style serving ware and how many plates per guest. A few shallow dishes and a gravy boat for mushroom sauce help. Ask about dinnerware and catering equipment.
What most hosts find out too late
- The kitchen cannot hold 12 dishes at once. Cook what you can ahead. Rent warming trays or chafing dishes for the hot dishes so the pierogi stay warm. See chafing dishes for a buffet.
- Christmas Eve is a peak delivery day. Rental companies close early or have short hours on Dec 24, so ask for delivery on Dec 22 or 23 and pickup after the holiday. See event rental delivery day.
- Count the coats. A family of 24 brings 24 coats in a Chicago December. Plan a rack or a bed.
- 1Step 1Before sunsetTables, cloths and hay in place, candles ready.
- 2Step 2First starEveryone gathers, a short prayer or reading.
- 3Step 3OpłatekWishes shared around the table.
- 4Step 4Soup, then the dishesServed in order, family style or by the plate.
- 5Step 5Dessert and carolsCoffee, tea and poppy seed cake.
Chicago notes
Many Polish homes in the city are bungalows and two-flats, with narrow halls and stairs. Measure doors and the path from the curb. Alley access to a back door can be easier than the front. See Chicago alley deliveries. If you host in a church hall, check the hall's rules about candles. For weddings and other Polish celebrations, see Polish wedding reception in Chicago.
