A tent in October is a heater question. A tent in January is a safety question. Chicago snow can pile up overnight, wet snow is heavier than fluffy snow, and wind blows it into drifts. The fall tent heating guide covers keeping guests warm. This post covers what changes when snow arrives.

Why snow changes the tent

Snow on a tent roof and what the structure must carry Side view of a tent with a peaked roof. A thick layer of snow sits on top with arrows pointing down labeled snow weight. Poles or frame carry the load to the ground. A person labeled on-site watcher stands beside the tent next to a note to clear snow early. Snow load is weight on the roof. The rating says how much the tent is built to carry.

Wind rating and snow rating are different. See tent wind ratings and weather safety for wind. Many party tents are made for mild weather and are not rated for snow at all. The installer is the one who knows the model, and the installer has to say yes.

Clearspan, frame and pole tents in snow

Tent type In winter Ask
Pole tent Center poles and stakes, a lighter build Is it rated for snow, and for how long can it stay up?
Frame tent Metal frame with no center poles, flexible layout What are the snow and wind ratings with sidewalls on?
Clearspan structure Engineered beams, heavier build, often rated What are the ratings, how is it anchored, can it carry heating?

A clearspan structure is often the better fit for a winter event because it is engineered for loads and can carry heating and cooling. See clearspan structure tent rental and frame tent vs pole tent. It is a larger job and more expensive than a light tent, and it still needs a ground plan and permits where they apply. Check with your village or city for permits, and see Chicago tent permit.

Heat and snow

Heaters make guests comfortable. They do not make a tent safe for snow. Some hosts hope the warmth will melt snow off the roof, and sometimes it does, but a tent that is not rated for snow should not rely on that. It melts and refreezes, and heat is not a plan. Heaters in tents have their own fire code limits, covered in tent heater vs patio heater and the fall guide. Ask the installer what heating is allowed with the model they plan to use.

Sidewalls, wind and drifts

Sidewalls keep the heat in and the wind out. They also catch the wind and can hold a drift against the base. Ask whether the snow and wind ratings are with sidewalls on or off. Solid walls insulate better than clear ones, as shown in tent sidewalls. Plan how guests get in and out, and keep paths and exits clear of snow.

What most hosts find out too late

Someone has to be there. A tent that stands for an event in winter needs a person who can watch the roof and talk to the installer if snow builds. Ask who that is, whether it is on site or on call, and what they will do. Do not leave it to a guest.

Snow can arrive before and after the event. The tent may be up the night before or stay up the night after. Ask what the plan is for those hours, and whether the installer can check on it. Overnight snow on an empty tent is the one nobody sees.

You may need a floor. Frozen ground, slush and snowmelt under a tent leave a muddy or icy surface. See tent flooring and subfloors and anchoring, since frozen ground changes how stakes work and the installer may choose ballast.

  5. 5Step 5Who clears snow, and how?The installer should say what is safe.
  6. 6Step 6What heat is allowed?Type, fuel, clearances and any inspection.

We recommend indoor space unless you have a strong reason for a tent, as noted in the winter planning guide. A tent attached to a house or beside a hall, with an indoor backup, is the safest pattern.

Frequently asked questions

Can a party tent handle snow?

Only if it is rated for snow. Many party tents are not. Ask the installer for the snow load rating for the exact tent and setup, in writing.

What is snow load on a tent?

It is the weight of snow on the roof, which a tent is built to carry up to a limit. Wet and drifted snow weigh more than light snow. The rating is set by the tent maker and the installer.

Can I heat a tent to melt the snow?

Do not count on it. Heat is for guests, and the amount of snow melt is not predictable. Follow the installer's advice and fire code limits.

Is a clearspan tent better in winter?

Often yes, since it is engineered and can be rated for snow and wind. It also costs more and needs a bigger install. Compare the ratings, not the type alone.

Who clears snow off a tent roof?

The installer or a trained crew should say how and who. Do not climb or pull on the roof yourself, since that is unsafe.

Do I need a permit for a winter tent in Chicago?

Tent permit rules apply in Chicago, and other towns have their own. Check with your village, city or building, and ask the installer what they pull.
