Clearspan Structure Tents: When to Rent One in Chicago

What a clearspan structure tent is, when it beats a frame tent, how it is anchored and what to ask before you rent one for a large Chicago-area event.

Most backyard parties use a standard frame tent, and that is the right answer. But once a guest list passes 200, or a company picnic, festival or wedding needs heating, a stage and a real kitchen nearby, a clearspan structure can be the better tool. This guide explains what you are paying for and how to decide.

What "clearspan" means

"Clearspan" describes a roof with no support between the outside walls. A standard frame tent also has no center poles, but a clearspan structure uses heavier extruded aluminum trusses sized by engineers. That lets it span wider, hold more weight and handle more wind.

Many clearspan structures are built in bays, usually 5 meters (about 16 feet 5 inches) or 10 feet apart, so the length is flexible. Widths often run 30, 40, 50, 60, 80 or 100 feet. Ask the company for the sizes it stocks.

The clearspan structure on the right has no interior poles, with tables, a dance floor and a stage placed freely. Pole tent: 6 poles Dance Stage Clearspan: no poles Same footprint, different floor
Without poles, tables, stage and dance floor go wherever the plan needs them.

When a clearspan structure makes sense

  • Large guest counts. Past 200 seated guests, a structure is often easier than joining several frame tents. See what size tent you need.
  • Long installs. Festivals, multi-day weddings and corporate events that stay up for a week or more benefit from the sturdier build.
  • Hard weather. Engineered structures have published wind and snow load ratings. Ask for them in writing. See tent wind ratings and weather safety.
  • Climate control. The solid frame carries ducted heating and cooling better than a light frame tent. See heating a tent in fall.
  • Events on pavement. Structures can be ballasted on parking lots and plazas, and some can be anchored to the ground with specialized fixings.
  • Add-ons. Hard walls, glass walls, raised flooring, stages and lighting rigs attach more easily to a structure.

When it is too much

A 20 x 30 tent in a Naperville backyard does not need a clearspan structure. It would cost more and the setup would be much bigger than the yard can take. For a small party, a frame tent is simpler and the smaller crew leaves less damage. Compare in frame tent vs pole tent.

Permits and engineering

Large tents in Chicago over 600 square feet need drawings stamped by an Illinois-licensed architect or structural engineer, and a high winds action plan. Expect that from any clearspan structure. Your tent company should provide engineering documents, a fire certificate for the fabric (NFPA 701 in Chicago) and anchorage details. See Chicago tent permits and, for suburbs, permits in the suburbs.

  1. 1Step 1Ask for the engineeringand wind rating in writing.
  2. 2Step 2Confirm the siteflat, clear overhead and a path for trucks.
  3. 3Step 3Ask about ballasthow much weight, where it sits, what protects the surface.
  4. 4Step 4Plan the permitwith at least 14 days in Chicago.
  5. 5Step 5Schedule the installfor a full day or two before the event.
Ask for the engineering, then Confirm the site, then Ask about ballast, then Plan the permit, then Schedule the install

  2. Will you pull the permit, and who pays the fee?
  3. What is the working footprint, including ballast and staging areas?

Seating a structure tent

Open floors reward a strong plan. Round tables of 10 at 12 square feet per guest is the baseline. For a 300-person gala, you might want matching Chiavari-style alternatives or ghost chairs for a modern look under a white ceiling.

Frequently asked questions

What is a clearspan tent?

A clearspan tent is a structure with no interior support poles. The aluminum frame carries the whole roof, so the floor is fully open at any width.

How big can a clearspan structure tent be?

Widths of 30 to 100 feet are common, and lengths grow in bays, so one structure can cover tens of thousands of square feet. The stock sizes depend on the rental company.

Is a clearspan tent better in wind?

Often yes, because it is an engineered frame with a published wind rating. Still, any tent needs a weather plan with a defined wind speed for evacuation. Ask the company for its number.

Can a clearspan structure be installed on a parking lot?

Yes, usually with ballast. The company must check surface condition, drainage and load, and your venue must approve it.

Do I need an engineer for a clearspan tent in Chicago?

Chicago requires licensed architect or structural engineer drawings for tents over 600 square feet or over 15 feet high. The rental company typically supplies these.

Can I heat and cool a clearspan structure?

Yes. They carry ducted HVAC well and sidewalls can be insulated or solid. Ask for the heating capacity and whether it is electric or fuel-fired, since many jurisdictions limit fuel-burning heaters near tents.
