Tent Permits in Chicago Suburbs: How to Check Your Village
Tent permit rules change village to village. See real examples from Oak Park, Winnetka, Naperville and Evanston, plus a checklist for finding your own.

Hosting a party in Oak Brook, Oak Park or Naperville means the City of Chicago's rules do not apply. Instead your village or city has its own code, often based on the International Fire Code, and its own forms. That is good news if you know where to look and a surprise if you do not. This guide shows real examples we checked, then gives you a process for your own town. Policies change, so always confirm with the municipality.
Real examples we checked
| Municipality | What we found | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Oak Park | Permit needed for tents over 400 sq ft, or anything in the village right-of-way | Apply online; installer lists setup and teardown dates; schedule inspection by phone |
| Winnetka | Permit for tents with sides over 400 sq ft, or open-sided tents over 700 sq ft | Application form lists a $145 tent fee and $90 electrical fee and asks for 7 days notice |
| Naperville | Dedicated Tent Permit page | Applicant or property owner must agree to follow the City's tent ordinances; special events can take up to 60 days for Council approval |
| Evanston | Publishes a tent inspection checklist | Referenced in Northwestern University guidance for organizers |
Those fees and lead times come from forms we reviewed and may have changed. Treat them as examples of what to expect, not a current price list.
What most suburban tent permits ask for
From the forms and guidelines reviewed, these are typical:
- Tent size and site plan. Oak Park, for instance, wants a site plan showing stakes, poles and cables and how the public is protected.
- A flame-resistance certificate. Oak Park asks for a cut sheet showing fire resistance, flame spread and smoke data. Winnetka's form asks for the manufacturer's fire resistance certificate.
- Anchoring. Winnetka's form says to use all anchor points, and that stakes and guy wires must not block exits.
- Fire extinguishers and separation. Winnetka's form lists one 5 lb ABC extinguisher per 1,500 square feet of floor space and 20 feet between open flames, cooking and the tent.
- Heaters. Winnetka prohibits portable outdoor gas-fired heaters inside the tent, and keeps them 5 feet away from the tent and exits. Electric heaters must be listed and plugged directly in. See heating a tent in fall.
- Inspection. Oak Park notes nothing should be concealed until a passing inspection is issued, so leave panels and anchors visible.
How to find your village's rules
- 1Step 1Searchthe village website for "tent permit" or "temporary structure".
- 2Step 2Callthe building department and the fire department. In some towns the fire department inspects.
- 3Step 3Ask the thresholdssquare feet with and without sides, and height.
- 4Step 4Ask the lead timeand whether setup can happen before the permit is issued.
- 5Step 5Ask who fileshomeowner, tent company or caterer.
- 6Step 6Get it in writingand share it with your vendors.
Special events and parks
If your event is in a park district facility, a forest preserve or a village-owned space, tent rules often sit on top of the facility's own permit. Naperville's page notes that special events can take Council approval and sometimes extra permits. Ask the park district or village event office before you pay a deposit. For the city side, read Chicago tent permits. For venues, see our Chicago venue rules for chair rentals.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the tent company handles it. Some do and some do not. Ask in writing.
- Counting only one tent. Many codes combine tents placed close together. Chicago, for example, groups tents within 12 feet.
- Planning a heater or grill under the tent. These are the items most likely to fail an inspection.
- Waiting too long. Peak June and September weekends book up, and permit review takes time.
