Tent Sidewalls: Clear, Window or Solid for Your Event?
Compare clear, cathedral window and solid white tent sidewalls for wind, rain, privacy and looks, and learn when to add them to a Chicago tent rental.

Sidewalls are the part of a tent rental that people add last and wish they had planned first. They decide whether the tent feels like a room or like a roof on stilts, and they change what the weather does to your guests. In the Chicago area, where one event can see sun, wind off the lake and a thunderstorm in an afternoon, the right sidewall mix matters. This guide compares the three common types and gives a plan by season.
The three common types
Solid white sidewalls
Best for: privacy, shade, a backdrop for projection or lighting, wind protection, or a catering side you do not want guests to see.
- Block sun and give true shade in July and August.
- Cut drafts and rain spray in spring and fall.
- Are the standard and usually the cheapest.
- Look plain, so many hosts add draping or flowers. See tent decor, draping and florals.
Cathedral window sidewalls
Best for: weddings and galas where you want a formal, architectural look with some of the view.
- Arched clear vinyl windows set in white panels.
- Show the garden or lake without exposing the whole tent.
- Often priced higher than solid panels. Ask your company for the difference per panel.
- Windows still hold heat and fog up when the tent is full.
Clear sidewalls
Best for: evening parties in spring and fall, tents with a great view, and using the tent as a glass pavilion at night.
- Show string lights and chandeliers glowing from outside.
- Keep rain and wind out while keeping the view.
- Trap heat in summer and can feel like a greenhouse. See cooling a tent in summer.
- Collect condensation inside when it is cool and humid outside.
- Show every puddle, trash can and port-a-potty beyond the tent. Check what is behind each side.
Which one for which season
| Season | Suggested mix | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (April to May) | Solid on windy sides, clear on the view | Wind and showers; cool air keeps clear panels pleasant |
| Summer (June to August) | Open sides or solid on sun sides, leave others open | Airflow matters more than walls |
| Early fall (September) | Mostly open, solid on west side | Evening chill after sundown |
| Late fall (October) | All sides closed, clear or window | Chicago's October average high is about 63 F and low about 45 F (NWS 1991 to 2020 normals) |
| Winter | Solid plus heat | See heating a tent in fall |
Wind and sidewalls
A tent with all sidewalls closed acts like a bigger sail than one with open sides, so it needs a heavier anchoring plan. Your tent company may tell you to open or drop the walls if the wind rises. Ask in advance what wind speed triggers that. See tent wind ratings and weather safety and stakes vs ballast.
Doors, entrances and service sides
Plan where guests enter, where the caterer enters and where the bar, DJ and restrooms sit. A few panels are doors. Exit paths must remain clear for code, so do not block a door with a decor wall or a buffet table. Chicago's permit process asks for floor plans with egress details for tents over 600 square feet. See Chicago tent permits.

Seating and the walls
Walls change how chairs feel. Clear panels at night make a white ghost chair nearly vanish, which suits a modern look. A solid white tent loves warm wood from a cross-back chair. See also tent layout with dance floor and bar.
