Tent Decor: Draping, Florals and Ceiling Ideas
Ideas for decorating the inside of a rental tent, from ceiling draping and greenery to florals and lighting, plus rigging limits to ask about.

A white tent is a blank canvas, and a blank canvas can look cold. Decor turns it into a room. It also adds weight, wind load and fire risk, so the plan has to include your tent company. Here is how to decorate a tent without breaking anything.
Start at the ceiling
The ceiling is the largest surface and the most visible. Options include:
- Liners. Fabric panels that cover the roof and hide the frame. Many tent companies offer them.
- Swagged draping. Sheer fabric in swoops from the center to the sides, often with lights behind.
- Canopy or ceiling tent. A smaller draped area over the dance floor or head table.
- Greenery garlands. Eucalyptus, ivy or ferns along the frame.
- Hanging florals. Floral clouds or installations at the center.
Rigging and weight limits
Tent frames are strong in the right places. Hanging a heavy floral cloud from the middle of a roof span can overload it. Ask your tent company:
- Where can we hang decor, and what is the weight limit per point?
- Do you provide rigging hardware, or must we use yours?
- Can installers attach to the frame during the install day?
- How does decor affect the wind plan?
Items hung from the tent also add to the wind load, so a heavy installation may mean a lower wind trigger. See tent wind ratings and weather safety.
Fire safety
Chicago's permit process requires tent fabric to have a fire resistance certificate under NFPA 701. Decor fabric needs similar attention in many places. Ask your village what it requires for draping and flammable decor, and request a flame retardant certificate from the fabric rental company. Keep decor away from heaters, lights that get hot and exits. Winnetka's tent form, for instance, asks for flammable materials to stay out of the tent. See heating a tent and permits in the suburbs.
Decor by style
| Style | Ceiling | Florals | Lighting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Romantic | White draping | Roses, peonies, trailing greens | Warm bistro lights |
| Garden | Natural greenery | Wild garden blooms | Lanterns |
| Modern | White liner | Single-color arrangements | Uplighting, geometric |
| Boho | Natural fabrics | Dried florals, pampas | Globe lights |
| Black tie | Chandeliers and draping | Tall arrangements | Dimmed warm light |
Walls and entrances
Sidewalls are decor too. Clear panels show the garden, and solid white makes a backdrop for uplighting. See tent sidewalls. Entrances deserve attention: an arch of greenery, signage and a defined welcome table make a good first impression, but keep door paths clear for exits.
Flowers in a hot or windy tent
Heat wilts flowers. Ask your florist about hardy choices and delivery timing. Place arrangements away from fans and open sides. Taller arrangements can block sightlines, so use clear stands or low arrangements for conversation. Our tent lighting ideas pair well with florals.

Tables and chairs complete the look
Chairs are a big visual element in a tent, because they fill the room at eye level. Clear ghost chairs keep sightlines open under florals, gold infinity chairs add glamour and rattan garden chairs suit a relaxed look. For linens, see the tablecloth size chart.
