A popcorn machine is the easiest party snack station: it smells great, looks like a carnival and keeps kids busy. It also asks for power, supplies and a clear plan for cleanup. This guide helps you size the machine, estimate supplies and place it in your event.

Popcorn machine sizes

Kettle size sets output. Most home parties use a 4 or 8-ounce machine.

The "ounce" number refers to the kernels per batch. Output varies by brand and operator, so treat these numbers as estimates and ask your rental provider.

How much popcorn per guest

  • Snack for a party: 1 to 2 cups popped per guest
  • Movie-night style: 3 cups per guest
  • Add-on at a buffet event: 1 cup per guest

One tablespoon of kernels makes roughly 2 cups popped, a standard pantry rule. So 100 guests at 1.5 cups each need about 150 cups, or around 75 tablespoons, which is under 2 cups of kernels. The commercial kits bundle kernels, oil and salt together in a "kit" sized to each kettle.

Guests Machine Batches Bags or cones Kernels Oil
25 4 oz 4 30 about 1 lb small bottle
50 4 or 8 oz 4 to 6 60 about 1.5 lb 1 bottle
100 8 oz 6 to 8 120 about 3 lb 1 to 2 bottles
200 12 oz 8 to 10 240 about 6 lb 2 to 3 bottles

Quantities are estimates for 1 to 1.5 cups per guest; ask your supplier for their kit sizes and add 20 percent for seconds.

Most poppers draw about 5 to 10 amps, which is a lot on a shared circuit. Don't put it on the same circuit as a coffee urn or a buffet warmer. Ask your venue for the breaker map, see lighting and power guides, and compare with coffee urn power.

Where to place it

  • Near entry or dessert, not in the buffet line
  • On a flat, sturdy surface, never on a wobbly folding table
  • Under a tent, not in direct sun, which melts oil and slows service
  • Out of the wind, which blows kernels and bags
  • Within 6 feet of an outlet so cords aren't across a walkway

Popcorn is a snack, not a meal. Pair it with cotton candy or snow cones for a carnival theme, see cotton candy machine rental and snow cone machine rental.

Allergy and safety notes

Popcorn is not safe for very young children because of choking, and some guests have corn allergies. Oil can burn. The kettle gets hot, and the glass cabinet should stay closed during popping. Keep kids a few feet from the machine, put a sign on the table with the oil type, and avoid mixing with nut-based snacks.

Cleaning and cleanup

Most rental companies expect the kettle and cabinet to be wiped, but "old maids" (unpopped kernels) collect in the bottom and a layer of oil forms. Use a scraper and a cloth, and never pour water into a hot kettle. Keep the leftover oil out of storm drains and bag it for trash.

Chicago party ideas

Popcorn works at school fundraisers, church festivals, graduation parties and carnival-themed corporate picnics. At a Chicago winter event, a popcorn bar with flavored seasonings is a warm, cheap addition. For a suburban backyard party, choose a machine with a cart and wheels for the patio. Frequently asked questions

How much popcorn do I need per person?

About 1 to 2 cups of popped corn per guest for a party snack. One tablespoon of kernels makes about 2 cups.

How many people does a popcorn machine serve?

An 8-ounce machine serves roughly 100 to 150 snack portions per hour. A 4-ounce machine serves about half as many.

What do I need to run a rented popcorn machine?

Power, a sturdy table, kernels, oil, salt, bags or cones, a scoop and an adult operator. Ask the rental company which supplies are included.

Can I use a popcorn machine outdoors?

Yes, in shade and out of the wind, with a weatherproof outlet. Rain and moisture are a danger with electrical equipment.

How early should I start popping?

About 20 minutes before guests want snacks. Pop a few batches and keep them in a covered container.
