Snow cone machine

Snow cones are a summer classic for graduation parties, block parties and company picnics around Chicago. The machine is the easy part. The real planning is ice, syrup and where the melted water goes. This guide gives the numbers and the setup.

How machine types differ

Ice and syrup needed per snow cone and for 100 guests Diagram showing a snow cone cup with three layers: about 5 to 6 ounces of shaved ice, 1 to 2 ounces of syrup, with totals for 150 cones of about 30 pounds of ice and 2 to 3 bottles of syrup. Syrup: 1 to 2 ozIce: 5 to 6 oz 150 cones =30 lb of ice2 to 3 bottles
One cone is mostly ice with a splash of syrup.
  • Block ice shavers: Use a 10 to 20-pound block of ice and shave it fine. Fast, fluffy snow and the classic look.
  • Cube ice crushers: Take cubes or crushed ice. Less fluffy, simpler to feed, easier to find ice.
  • Electric countertop models: Smaller output, ideal for under 60 guests.
  • Hand-crank or manual: Cute but slow; not for a crowd.

Ask your supplier which type comes with the rental and what ice it needs. Block ice must be thawed slightly (tempered) for 10 to 15 minutes for the best shave.

Supply chart

Guests Cones (1.5 each) Cups Ice (est.) Syrup bottles Flavors
25 40 50 8 lb 1 2
50 75 90 15 lb 2 3
100 150 180 30 lb 3 3 to 4
150 225 270 45 lb 4 to 5 4
200 300 350 60 lb 6 4

The ice figure assumes about 3 to 4 ounces of melted loss per cone and fresh ice. Plan more when it is hot. Ask the ice supplier for block or bag options. A cooler to store ice, plus a second cooler for backup, is a must; see keeping food cold at outdoor events.

Setup in five steps

  1. 1Step 1Tablea sturdy 6-foot table with a cloth and a mat underneath.
  2. 2Step 2Powera grounded outlet within 6 feet, or a generator.
  3. 3Step 3Icein a cooler beside the machine, with a scoop.
  4. 4Step 4Syrupsin pump or squeeze bottles, labeled by flavor.
  5. 5Step 5Wastea bin for cups and a bucket for melted water.
Table, then Power, then Ice, then Syrups, then Waste

The most common mistake is forgetting drainage. A shaver can leave a puddle under the table in 20 minutes. Place a tray or a bucket under the chute and a mat under your feet.

Where to place it

Keep the machine in the shade but near enough to the action that kids can find it. Put it away from the buffet and drink table to avoid a second queue. On grass, place a sturdy board or interlocking mat under the table legs. For picnic-style seating, see outdoor event chairs and weather.

Flavors and dietary notes

  • Offer 3 to 4 flavors: cherry, blue raspberry, lemon-lime and grape cover most kids.
  • Sugar-free syrups exist; ask your supplier.
  • Label dyes, since some guests avoid them.
  • Syrup stains linen and clothing. Keep napkins and a damp towel nearby, and keep bottles off cloth surfaces.
  • Do not put loose ice in a dispenser, see beverage dispensers for drink options.

Power and noise

Shavers use a motor of about 1/3 to 1/2 horsepower, drawing a few amps, but still should not share a circuit with an urn or fryer. They are loud, so place them away from speeches. See lighting and power for circuits and generators.

Chicago event ideas

Snow cones suit June graduation parties, July 4th picnics, August block parties and company picnics at forest preserves. Check whether the park district or forest preserve allows rented machines or food vendors, since many require a permit for vending. For a fall or winter indoor party, a hot chocolate bar usually works better.

Frequently asked questions

How much ice do I need for 100 snow cones?

About 20 pounds, since each cone uses 5 to 6 ounces. For 100 guests at 1.5 cones each, plan about 30 pounds to allow for melting and waste.

How much syrup per snow cone?

About 1 to 2 ounces. A 32-ounce bottle makes roughly 16 to 30 cones, depending on how heavy your pour is.

Can I use bagged ice in a snow cone machine?

Check the manual. Block-ice machines need blocks, while crushers take cubes or crushed ice. Using the wrong ice can jam the blade.

How many snow cones can a machine make in an hour?

Roughly 120 to 240 with a good operator. A small countertop model makes less.

Do I need a license to sell snow cones?

Only if you sell them. For a private party with free cones you generally do not. If you charge, check with your local health department.

Where does the melted water go?

Into a tray or bucket under the chute. Empty it often, and keep it off the lawn near seating.
