Cotton candy is pure theater. Guests watch it spin and kids line up for it. It is also one of the more fussy machines to rent, because humidity, power and an untrained operator can turn a fun idea into a sticky mess. Here is how to size it, supply it and place it at a Chicago-area party.

How many cones per hour

Sugar and cones needed for cotton candy by guest count Bar chart of pounds of floss sugar for 50, 100, 150 and 200 guests: about 3, 6, 8 and 11 pounds, assuming one cone per guest plus 25 percent extra. 36811 50100150200 lb
Pounds of floss sugar for one cone per guest plus 25 percent extra (estimates).

Output depends on the machine, the operator and the weather. A small party machine may do 30 to 40 cones an hour, while a commercial model with a skilled operator can do far more. Ask your rental source for the actual rate on the machine you will get.

What you need

Item Quantity for 100 guests Notes
Floss sugar 5 to 6 lb Pre-colored or flavored mixes are easiest
Cones 125 Paper cones or clear bags
Machine 1 Add a second for 200 or more
Table 6 ft banquet Sturdy, with a cloth
Outlet 1 grounded Do not share with a warmer or urn
Operator 1 adult Trained, with hair tied back
Trash 1 bin Sticky paper and sugar

Those counts are estimates from common supplier guides. Confirm with whoever supplies your sugar.

Humidity is the enemy

Cotton candy absorbs moisture from the air and collapses. A damp Chicago summer day, with humidity often well above 60 percent, makes floss wilt in minutes and clogs the spinner head. You will see this on lakefront evenings and after storms. To protect it:

  1. 1Step 1Spin under a tentor inside an air-conditioned room.
  2. 2Step 2Spin to order,not ahead.
  3. 3Step 3Bag finished conesin clear sealed bags if you must make ahead.
  4. 4Step 4Keep the sugar sealedand use a fresh bag in humid weather.
  5. 5Step 5Wipe the bowlbetween flavors to avoid clogs.

Cool, dry Chicago fall days are the best weather for it. In winter, indoor events with the heat on work well.

Placement and layout

Put the machine on a stable table at least 3 feet from walls and tent sides, because hot sugar can stick to fabric. Keep it out of the main buffet line, and near the dessert area or entrance. Place a drop cloth or a mat under it for floor protection, since floss and sugar spatter. A 6-foot table fits the machine, a cone holder and a sign. For food stations that work with it, see food station ideas, popcorn machine rental and snow cone machine rental.

Power and safety

A cotton candy machine uses a motor and a heating element. Many draw 8 to 12 amps, so give it its own circuit and a cord rated for the load. Ask your venue where the outlets are and which breaker feeds them. See our lighting and power guides. Never use it in the rain or on wet ground. The spinner head is hot, so keep children back from the bowl. Wear food-safe gloves if you serve for a crowd.

Allergy and labeling

Many floss sugars are only sugar and dye, but some flavors contain additives. Put a sign with the flavor name, and tell guests with dye sensitivities. Do not put the machine near a nut-based snack.

Chicago event ideas

Cotton candy works at school fairs, church festivals, graduation parties, backyard birthdays and corporate picnics. For weddings, it is popular as a late-night or "candy bar" item. Pair it with fall festivals at a suburb farm or orchard where the cooler weather helps. For a school, park district or church event, ask the property whether outside vendors or machines are allowed.

Frequently asked questions

How much cotton candy do I need per person?

One cone per guest, plus about 25 percent for seconds. A pound of floss sugar makes roughly 20 to 25 cones, depending on the cone size.

How long does it take to make a cone of cotton candy?

About 30 to 60 seconds for a trained operator. A small machine may be slower, so ask about output.

Can I use a cotton candy machine outside?

Yes in shade and low humidity, with a covered outlet. Wind and humidity both ruin the floss, so a tent with sidewalls helps.

Do I need an operator?

Yes. Someone has to stay with it, spin to order and keep the area clean. Ask your rental company if they provide training or staff.

Why is my cotton candy flat and sticky?

Humidity or a damp bag of sugar. Use fresh sugar, spin in a cooler room and bag finished cones quickly.
