Marriage Proposal Setup Rentals: Backdrop, Lights and Table
Plan a marriage proposal for Christmas, New Year's or Valentine's Day with a backdrop, marquee letters, lights and a table for two, plus a winter indoor plan.

Christmas, New Year's and Valentine's Day are three of the most popular nights to propose, and they all fall in the coldest part of a Chicago year. That changes the plan. You cannot count on a warm patio, and the sun is gone by late afternoon. The good news is that a proposal is a small job. You need a good spot, some light and a table, and you can rent most of it for one evening.
Pick the date and the place first
For 2026 and 2027, the dates people choose most are Christmas Eve (Thursday, Dec 24, 2026), New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day (Sunday, Feb 14, 2027). Valentine's Day on a Sunday means restaurants are booked, so a home or small venue setup is easier to control.
- At home. Private and warm. You control the music, the lighting and who is in the next room.
- A rented room. A party room, loft or community space gives you more floor for a backdrop and a group of friends who come out after.
- Outdoors. A park or the lakefront looks great but the wind and cold are real. If you go outside, keep the moment short and have a warm room ready. Check with your park district about any rules for setups.
The pieces of a proposal setup
Backdrop. A flower wall, a draped panel or a simple arch. Keep it close to the table so the photos work. See our flower wall guide for sizes.
Marquee letters. Big lit letters spell "MARRY ME" or a name. Count the letters and check how each is powered, since lit letters need outlets or batteries. Our guide to marquee letters covers sizes and power.
Lighting. Warm light is kinder in photos and feels softer in the room. String lights, uplights and candles work together. See winter event lighting and sunset times before you pick the hour.
A table for two. A small round or square table, two chairs and a cloth. A 30-inch round or a 36-inch square is enough for two plates and a candle. Choose chairs that look good in photos and are comfortable for a long dinner. See chairs for events.

Time the reveal
- 1Step 1Before they arriveTest the lights and letters. Turn the room to its dim setting. Have your photographer or friend hidden and ready.
- 2Step 2The arrivalWalk them in from the door along the path of lights. Keep the first minute calm.
- 3Step 3The momentPick a spot near the table. Have the letters on and the music low enough to hear you.
- 4Step 4The photosSpend 10 minutes on photos while the lights still look fresh.
- 5Step 5Dinner or the surpriseSit at the table for two, or open the door to friends and family for a party.
A surprise party after
Many people plan friends and family to arrive after the yes. That needs a second room or a side door, plus chairs and tables for the group. Keep them out of sight until you give the signal. For ideas on quiet staging, see our surprise party planning guide. If your group is 20 or more, a cocktail setup keeps things simple: see standing reception layout.
What most hosts find out too late
- Check power before you design. Lit letters, string lights and a speaker need outlets. Find them, and plan where cords run so no one trips.
- Winter delivery needs a window. Rental companies may have holiday hours or busy weekends. Book early for Christmas, New Year's and Valentine's weekends, and ask what time setup can happen.
- Measure the doors. Backdrops, panels and letters come in big pieces. Check doors, stairs and elevators in your building.
- Candle rules vary by building. Many rooms limit open flame. Use battery candles if you are not sure, and check with your building or venue.
A winter plan B
If the plan was a park or patio, have a warm room ready for the same layout. A small heated space beats a cold outdoor setup because the lights and the sound hold up better indoors. If you want to use an outdoor spot for the proposal and then move inside, keep the indoor setup ready so you can go straight in. For outdoor heat, see how many patio heaters you need.
