A flower wall is a backdrop made of panels covered in blooms, usually artificial, that lock together on a frame. It gives you a wall of color for photos, a ceremony backdrop or a bar or sweetheart table feature. This guide covers sizes, what is included, how they hold up and what to compare when you ask for a quote around Chicago.

What a flower wall includes

  • Panels, commonly about 2 x 3 feet, that connect.
  • A frame or stand to hold the panels upright.
  • Blooms in rose, hydrangea, peony or greenery mixes.
  • Optional sign, usually neon or letters in the middle.

Fresh flower walls exist, but they cost more and take florist labor. Rental walls are almost always artificial, so you can match color and use the same wall for both ceremony and reception.

Colors and styles

White and ivory suit weddings. Blush, peach and sage work for showers. Red, burgundy and gold suit winter or holiday events. Mixed pastel walls read as playful. Choose colors that stand out against your linens, not blend in.

Indoor and outdoor use

Indoors a flower wall is easy. Outdoors wind turns an 8-foot wall into a sail, so ask the rental company how it anchors the frame. Direct sun can fade artificial petals over time, and rain can warp panels. In Chicago spring and fall, afternoon wind off the lake and gusts through open fields can be strong, so build a plan for tents and sidewalls, or a sheltered spot.

Price drivers

We do not publish rental prices for flower walls. The cost depends on size, flowers, frame, delivery distance, install time and whether lights or a sign are added. Request a quote with the wall size and date.

How the wall holds up through the night

Artificial petals are held with clips or glue, so they stay put, but a guest who leans on the wall can pop panels loose. Put a floor mark or a small sign asking guests to stand a step back. Keep drinks away from it. If you have kids at the event, a taller bottom edge helps keep little hands off. Ask the rental company whether it sends a crew to check the wall before the event starts and whether it is included in the quote.

Pair it with drape and signs

A flower wall in front of white drape reads cleaner than flowers on a bare wall. See pipe and drape and neon and marquee signs. Chairs: a velvet chair in front of a flower wall makes a strong portrait seat.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Ordering a wall that is too small for a group photo.
  • Skipping anchoring outdoors.
  • Choosing colors that match the linens exactly.
  • Leaving no room for the photographer.

Frequently asked questions

How big is a flower wall?

Common sizes are 4 x 8, 8 x 8 and 8 x 12 feet. Larger walls are built from more panels. Ask for exact dimensions.

Are rental flower walls real flowers?

Mostly artificial. Fresh flower walls need a florist and cost more. Artificial walls let you reuse the look for both ceremony and reception.

How long does it take to set up a flower wall?

Often a few hours, depending on the size. Plan setup before guests arrive.

Can a flower wall be used outdoors?

Yes with anchoring and a wind plan. Direct sun and rain can wear on artificial blooms, so ask the rental company.

What color flower wall should I choose?

Choose a color that contrasts with your linens and dress. White and blush suit weddings, and bold colors suit parties.

Can I add a neon sign to a flower wall?

Often yes. Ask about power and how the sign mounts to the frame.
